Hi there,
I followed the thread about the 'Sparkly' filter from SamJ with a great attention, and I found out an idea to write my own similar filter, called 'Patterns / Stars'.
It should be available in the G'MIC plug-in after a filter update :

Image

The main reason I wrote this filter is to find a way to quickly draw clouds of sprites (here, stars), and yes, it is possible in G'MIC, without having to use a '-repeat...-done' loop ;)

So, nothing really new here, but probably a faster version than the one from Samj. Let me know if you find it useful or if you have some additional suggestions.

Oh, David, I love this. I like the randomness of both placement and size of stars. I'm going to play with it some more before I make any requests about it. Using a color didn't make any difference for me. The filter just punched out transparent stars for me. I added a yellow background layer for each stars layer.

Bonjour,

:tyspin and :jumpclap your script is very fast.

I try to understand the command "star" but I have some difficulties : sprites3d ? (This command is not in the documentation).

Can you describe your script with comments for a better understanding :) Add it in your documentation :) :) :)

samj, I wrote some additional G'MIC commands to ease the writing of the final filter. The command '-sprites3d' is one of them. I'm building the new documentation, so it should be available on the web page in a few moments.

David, I tried to use your stars filter and the whole dialog looked different and I couldn't get it to do anything. Are you working on it or something?

same here
i could not change the color from full transparency:
if i try the color widget show up but does nothing and the color remain the same..none and invisible :gaah

With that setting for color it erase making large transparent holes but the holes are not shaped as star

Edit
the color widget works only IF inserting manually the numbers in the numeric boxes ;
no way to use the sliders in case the command is just ignored.

As i wrote above you may give a color but only putting number in the numeric field of the color widget
instead as you seen command with slider are ignored
---------------------------------------------------------------------
anyway now that i could give a color to the stars i may see how the filter work and i noticed that often the star overlap
(overlap is the cause of the "large transparent holes no shaped as stars" when value for Density is high)

That could be nice and the stars nicer with a second color used to add a contour line to the star

If i may suggest a default yellow star with white outline

I hope to not ask much but in case 2 added options would be excellent:

,the 1st to kept the star outline sharp , internally and externally
the 2nd to smooth and merge the outlines, the stars edges color internally (inside the star , let say apply a blur from the edges direct to the the center )

the second option should add a glossy effect and some depth

I trust the Internet box has a check in it. It's by the refresh button.

and if is not sufficient just try to reset :
UNcheck all external sources, refresh, CHECK again all external sources , refresh again

If your version of gmic is recent should work

I'm not sure I understand how to get the stars to even appear???? Ihave them in GMIC...in fact I have 419 filters in there and the script in GMIC seems to work but shows me nothing on the background canvas

I'm really sorry, as it seems this filter is using features that were subject to a bug in latest stable version (1.5.1.9) of G'MIC.
In latest 1.5.2.0 beta, this is corrected.
Currently, we are working very hard to release the next stable version of G'MIC this week, with a really great new web-service to offer most of the plug-in filters online, directly into the web browser (so without having to install GIMP anymore).
As you can imagine, there are a lot of issues related to this new service, that's why I'm quite silent for the moment :p

wouldn't online filters/plug-ins be a hassle with slow upload and download speeds?

Not particularly, once your image is uploaded to the server, most of the data you get afterwards (images from the filters previews) are actually quite small images (compressed in JPG, with relatively low quality, since for a preview we don't need more).
