didnt know where to post it :)

found this when i surfed some blogs

it reminds me a bit of your crinkled tinfoil tutorial and it looks metallic, so i thought this might be of interest to you (and everybody else)

i think its a label logo for a clothes company or something like this - a bit cliche but the effect is very nice

Is there a link to a tutorial for that?

I doubt there' s gonna be an actual tutorial because the song just came out a couple of days ago, including the cover.
I think the effect is quite cool though, maybe there' s a way to replicate it.

Esper, Would you mind sharing the link to that tin foil tut?

esper: this is such a surprise - you went and found a record cover ;) . it's a really nice effect, reminds me pleasantly of aged silver that someone's been trying damaged hammers on.

Thanks Esper. That is pretty cool looking. To me it looks more like a hunk of metal that was hacked on and hacked on more than foil or even chisled. This is what I get using foil even with bumpmapping.

Image

Not even close! I don't know how to get that uneven chisled look.

Skyroma - just go to the tutorials section and do a search by author. Both tuts I did on foil are listed.

I agree, maybe you could get those shard patterns in a similar way Moko get hers in this thread?
viewtopic.php?f=11&t=5409

then fill them with a gradient and posterize ?

evil :hehe

i swear, i found it on a fashionblog site and didnt know it was a cover

also i never heard of this guy

Like the image Esper and just to confuse everyone even more heres a tinfoil tutorial I did a while ago.

Ok so after posting this I couldn't help but have a play.

Here is the xcf file to the above image

I'm thinking the best way to get the chisled look is to create an animated brush of various shaped polygons.

Just going to update this post, but I created an animated brush, here it is if you wont to have a play

Replacing the holes with this brush gave these results

Maybe the polygons need to be more irregular and I'm sure with drac's knowledge of all things shiney he will be able to get it more metallic looking.

Sorry Esper, Kind of highjacking your thread a bit, but this is an interesting challange.

The previous results were ok, but if you look closely you'll see polgons sitting on top of polygons, obviously if it were chiselled this couldn't happen.

So I set my brush spacing up so it wouldn't overlap "setting 150", set jitter to 5 and set size as random.
Then stroked six different layers with the brush and set each one to grain mergre so they blended in with each other were they overlapped.

Here is the result

And here is the new XCF file

Was still not happy with the way the polygons are sitting on top of each other, so went back to a single layer for the brush and keeping the random size checked and jitter settings reduced brush size to 0.5 and spacing to 100 and stroke 3 straight lines across the text.
Converted that layer to white on transparent and used it as the selection to do a reverese bevel effect of what I had applied to the intial text, then cropped layer to text selection.
Finally I gave it a metallic look using the curves but slightly more subtle than on the text.

Here is the results

Again here is the XCF file

very nice he4rty !

i think one of the problems is that the dents appear very deep and are fighting with the 3D of the beveled text

your text almost looks like somebody fired a shotgun at the metal letters

btw, never knew one could make an animated brush...you are very knowledgable !
is your brush made from your platonic solids ?

Funny you mention shotguns but I thought the same, no the brush wasn't made from the platonic solid shapes but theres an idea though.

As to the animated brush there is tutorial on here somewhere.

Ok, before we start have dug out the link to the Animated Brush Tutorial.

So tried some new ideas and hopefully improved some old ones, basically decided to try a rotating triangle brush.
Also increased the bevel on the main text to twice the bevel of the brush.
Softened the colours of the brush so hopefully not so harsh.
Created displace map and added lines to the image using the displace filter.

Here are the results

Here are the resources for you to download.

he4rty: wow, that's great work! thanks for sharing the resources.

i had to try this too, but i thought it would be easier to use patterned layers than to brush in the chisel strokes. i used an accidental pattern made with a g'mic filter and filled one layer with the original size, another with 1/4 size. then i added random transparent parties on both layers and merged them. i made another layer with some motion blurred noise stripes, but first i couldn't get that to show as much as i liked and then it was too pronounced - not too happy about that, but the stripe-like grunge was what i liked best about the original. then i bevelled and distorted the bevel a bit.

i think this looks really good (the pic is a bit small, so cant see all the detail)

i would like to see a tuorial or a bit more detailed explanation how you did it !

esper: you don't know what you're asking for, brother! i usually save all my experimenting - make several xcf:s with all the layers saved and save every accidental pattern that comes up in the process just in case i need it later on, so usually i can retrace my steps perfectly. not this time, though! my xcf was even more messy than usual and i didn't name my layers, so i don't know exactly what all the layers did. i've done my best to reconstruct it, though and i post the cleaned up version.

i didn't keep my pattern either, but i can tell you exactly where it came from - it's the voronoi pattern from dracs hammered metal tutorial: metal wurx XI - hammered metal. i duplicated the pattern layer, then scaled it down to 1/4 size by using small filters - map - small tiles twice. i changed the brush dynamics on the eraser so i could make some random sized and random spreaded holes in the top layer, then i merged them.

apart from that pattern i seem to have used two different grunge layers, one probably made from hsv noise run through motion blur and with inverted colours, the other most likely made by adding a canvas to a white layer in gimpressionist and then run it through motion blur and invert the colours. i spent a lot of time trying to get the right stripes but wasn't entirely happy with any of my results.

i know i used a distorted bevel somewhere in the process because the straight bevel didn't work with the chisel pattern, but somehow i must have lost the distorted bevel layer and i'm not sure exactly how i did it or where i used it.

i used a tweaked version of this technique erisian's glass text to get a tiny bit of gloss on the surface (and that is probably where i used the distorted bevel too) but i don't remember how i tweaked it and haven't given myself any hints. i think i used draconian's settings for chrome instead of erisian's settings for glass when i ran the curves, though.

whew, long story! here's the xcf anyway, you'll probably come up with something better yourself.

hmm... well, that xcf is a mess, can't do much about that. but i could make a new voronoi pattern and post it.
