esper: you don't know what you're asking for, brother! i usually save all my experimenting - make several xcf:s with all the layers saved and save every accidental pattern that comes up in the process just in case i need it later on, so usually i can retrace my steps perfectly. not this time, though! my xcf was even more messy than usual and i didn't name my layers, so i don't know exactly what all the layers did. i've done my best to reconstruct it, though and i post the cleaned up version.
i didn't keep my pattern either, but i can tell you exactly where it came from - it's the voronoi pattern from dracs hammered metal tutorial:
metal wurx XI - hammered metal. i duplicated the pattern layer, then scaled it down to 1/4 size by using small filters - map - small tiles twice. i changed the brush dynamics on the eraser so i could make some random sized and random spreaded holes in the top layer, then i merged them.
apart from that pattern i seem to have used two different grunge layers, one probably made from hsv noise run through motion blur and with inverted colours, the other most likely made by adding a canvas to a white layer in gimpressionist and then run it through motion blur and invert the colours. i spent a lot of time trying to get the right stripes but wasn't entirely happy with any of my results.
i know i used a distorted bevel somewhere in the process because the straight bevel didn't work with the chisel pattern, but somehow i must have lost the distorted bevel layer and i'm not sure exactly how i did it or where i used it.
i used a tweaked version of this technique
erisian's glass text to get a tiny bit of gloss on the surface (and that is probably where i used the distorted bevel too) but i don't remember how i tweaked it and haven't given myself any hints. i think i used draconian's settings for chrome instead of erisian's settings for glass when i ran the curves, though.
whew, long story! here's the xcf anyway, you'll probably come up with something better yourself.
