I mentioned a few days ago that one of my rats, Delilah was sick. This is an update. She's eating like a little pig, I expect her tail to get curly any day so she looks like a pig instead of just eating like one. She's also very active. Her lungs are still noisy but she's doing well. I know, rat health isn't a big deal but it represents a minor victory, which we need in our life right now.

Now that's cool news. Looks like Delilah's the explorer too. :)

The girls are all explorers. The males will explore their environment once then go flop in a corner until they get fed. The girls on the other hand can't sit still.

Regarding the video, it's SO her in some ways, I named her after her evil counterpart because she's a perpetual trouble causer. the day I got her she got lose and I couldn't find her for over a day.

I lost a hamster once...I worried all day until I found it, I was afraid she would be trapped somewhere and die of thirst. Of course, my mom was sensible and put the cage down on the floor with the door open and she came home! I guess she smelled the food.

Hamsters are vile evil things. I've yet to see one that wasn't a biter, rats if raised right will never bite unless it's by accident. Yep, Maria, my girls are all cute.

I was lucky, my hamster only bit me a couple times when I grabbed her suddenly. If I approached slowly and with a soothing voice, it was ok. But my rats never ever bit me, and they seem much smarter and have what I would call personalities.

Yes, when we were kids, my mother let us take in a couple rats from someone who was moving. They were the black and white markings. I don't remember the females names, our favorite was the male, Speedy Gonzales. We let him nap on our bed with us and and join us at the dinner table. Mom didn't seem to mind too much, except when Speedy tried to nibble on 'her' food or the butter. Speedy loved butter! We had them for a year or two, I forget, but then some kid at school who wanted them and had a nice set of cages. We gave them to him because we only had these big wooden boxes for them, and we were already getting tired of having to clean the boxes daily.

To me, there are no better pets, their body language is so extensive that you can tell what they're thinking just by looking at them and every rat has it's own personality. I wish those two movies, Willard and Ben hadn't given them such a bad name, they're really very gentle and very clean.
I really want to try and raise some wild rats if I get the chance, some people have done it and say they do fine.
