in periods, i make collages online at polyvore.com (very much a pink fluffy girl site by the look of it, but in the art section, where i hang out, there's actually a variety of people, young and old, women and men). i love cutting things out and putting them together to make new meanings. many of the results would look very good as paintings and since i don't have the time and energy to paint much for real right now, i decided a while ago that i would fake paint them in gimp. it takes a lot of experimenting and there's not many results i'm really happy with so far, but with this collage called "the royal headdress" i think i'm on the right track ... or?

esper: yes. here's the original - i started working from a model pic, then built up a fantasy style headdress and added elements to the background. i like it as a collage, but it would look lovely as a painting.

esper: :paint :wh :jumpclap :clap :wow :hi5 - really nice job, brother!!! i kept trying to get the same level of painting effect on the model pic and the background, but you did the opposite aqnd emphasized the differences and it looks just great! what did you use to bring the edges out in the patterns?

erisian: thank you! do you ever use collage technique yourself or do you stick to painting? you'd be an instant hit in the polyvore art section, you know :).

The new background is good. I think the women needs to be more like the first one so you can use the colors from her lips, eye shadow and headdress.

esper: that's quite a transformation! it's fun to see other people put their touch to your pictures - i would never have chosen a grey background but it looks really cool that way. i like the added symmetry too. but i agree with odinbc about the woman, she desperately needs colour.

I sometimes play around with cutting and pasting but I'm usually trying to achieve a surreal photographic effect rather than a collage effect. Polyvore???

erisian: polyvore.com - originally created for young girls to make their own fashion magazine-like style plates in and for online stores and designer brands to make their products sell better, but an odd assortment of people also found it could be used to make art and they've been at it ever since.
