GIMP Version: 2.8.0
Operating System: Windows
OS Version: XP - SP3
GIMP Experience: Beginner Level

I encountered problems with importing eps/ps files but no problems with exporting. Searching the internet I found something like:
"postscript is omitted from Gimp 2.8.0 after recompiling it with postscript enabled eps/ps support was back."

As far as I can see it was even posted as a bug to the gimp bug/wishlist.

1. Is there anyone who can confirm this and how I can get back postscript (import)support.
2. Is there anyone who knows if the new window release of 2.8.2 is compiled with postscript support??

I've got the "official" build of 2.8.2 on Windows XP and it seems to be OK with .ps & .eps files

Thank you Kevin.

I made only a mistake I have 2.8.2 instead of 2.8.0 running.
I'm just on another system also with 2.8.2 and it runs just fine with eps/ps. Looking for differences between both systems now.

The official word from the developers - eps file format is not FULLY supported by GIMP, thus, expect problems while importing/exporting.
And I believe it's a ghostscript GIMP is now using to handle those kind of file formats.

Yes but why is it correct running on system 1 and not on system 2?? Both are XP SP3, same ghostscript and ghostview. Even the environment variables are the same so what am I overlooking??

When you create eps file on system 1 and try to open it on system 2 there may be a problem because specified path to gs location for a particular eps file is now different. There could be some other dependables we're not aware of. I've encountered with this kind of problem before. Probably, has nothing to do with GIMP. It's Windows Environment that messes things up. Been a total mystery for me. Never got a definitive answer from the devs too. That's why they say it's not fully supported format.

now gs should be included, in previous version of gimp was needed or set a e. variable or maybe more simple add the ghostscript .exe to the gimp bin folder

You may try this last ,at least is quick to reverse if doesn't work (but should)

That is a good idea to put ghostscript to the bin folder I will try that.

Actually, you need to declare and environmental variable pointing to where Ghostscipt is located. :)

I know lylejk, I have already done that and more

But made some progress. It is not Gimp the problem is ghostscript. Starting gs solitair the following message appears: "unable to open the display device. ---quitting". With other words the default output device is not correctly set, why I don't know. I am now searching the registry for an answer but before that I first remove gs and any traces of it in the registry and install the latest version again. Hope everything is oke by then if not.... :gaah

:yes
Problem solved Gimp reads postscript files again. After removing gs with revo uninstaller in advanced mode, run ccleaner and easycleaner, started regedit to delete the last traces of gs I installed gs again and :yes ghostscript was back online. All helpers :tyspin

Tip for users who uses the plugin indexprint with postscript files, set GS_OPTIONS to "dpi 300" (with quotes). Your files will now be much better rendered. This option will be integrated in the next release of indexprint.

I've been working with ps files (originally created with the SAS software package) for long. I never had problems with earlier versions of windows (up to windows 7), gimp (up to version 2.6.x) and ghostscript (up to version 8.x). I had recently to re-install windows 7 pro on my computer. I then installed the latest version of gimp, 2.8.4, but was unable to access to my ps files, accompagnied with gs907. Did not work neither with earlier versions of ghostscript :gaah. The only solution i found was to work with an earlier version of gimp (2.6.12). And this gimp 2.6.12. opens my ps files, with any version of ghostscript, even the latest (907). So i guess it is not really a problem with gs, or with environment variables in windows, but a problem with the latest gimp versions that cannot find the path to gs.

It's a pitty because i really apreciated new features of gimp 2.8

I am using gimp-2.8.4 from partha.com and it handles eps, and ps files just fine.

Hi! I am also currently having problems with importing eps files. BTW, I'm a newbie in GIMP. I just need this to make some eps files editable. Hope you could help me.

BTW, here's the error that I encountered:
Quote:
Plug-in crashed: "file-ps.exe"
(C:\Program Files\GIMP 2\lib\gimp\2.0\plug-ins\file-ps.exe)

The dying plug-in may have messed up GIMP's internal state. You may want to save your images and restart GIMP to be on the safe side.

Thanks in advance! :)

Have you installed GhostScript?

When you installed Ghost Script did it add a PATH variable to the gs executable for you?

Bonjour,

@Rod
Depending on the version of Gimp it is not always necessary to have Ghostscript installed.

@Bang
What is your version of Windows, 32-bit or 64-bit?

If you are under 64-bit I strongly advise you to download the portable version from this topic (This is tested with PS and EPS files) :
