Ubuntu include a screengrab utility but that miss some features i need

i try to google i notice several articles mostly on shutter, but looking in the feature list, i can't see what i am looking for

1)after the first grab should remain active in the tray if not purposefully closed (i don't like have to search it in the menu or call again from terminal each time i have to take a screenshoot)
2) remember last setting used, and propose that
(so if i had to take a dozen of grab of the active windows, i have not to change the default setting again and again and again --for a dozen of time )

while i can't care less of the ability to edit the capture within the program, that seems the most bloated and publicized advanced feature

Oddly enough, there's a file in the MyPaint source that takes a user-defined screenshot of an area when you run it.

But first, just try pushing the PrtScrn button. That brings up a simple screenshot tool on my box.

I'm on OpenSUSE with Gnome so it might be different for you.

For me:
PrtScrn takes a screenshot of the entire desktop.
Alt+PrtScrn takes a screenshot of the active window.

This is built-in. The only thing it doesn't do is allow you to select an area to take a screenshot of. But you can always crop in GIMP.

I use Ksnapshot and (alt + prtscn) and then I crop the image. The Gnome app that came with Ubuntu didn't want to grab active windows for some reason (bug?).

I use ksnapshot, too. I like it. Set the timer for 10 seconds, click New shapshot, then click the window you want it to copy then get the cursor out of the way and wait until the dialog returns. I didn't have to crop this screenshot, just copied it to the clipboard and created from clipboard in gimp.

I could have captured the same image with Alt + Printscreen.

I just learned a very interesting trick for the standard gnome screenshot function.

Open System - Preferences - Keyboard Shortcuts.
Click "Add".
Name the new shortcut whatever you want. me, mine is named "Screenshot Grab".
In the command box, type: gnome-screenshot -a
Assign whatever keyboard shortcut you want, me = CTRL + A (check to see if you have an assignment set already before overwriting it!)
Close.
Press the new shortcut = kaching!

Are you spelling it correctly when you check the repos? It's ksnapshot not knapshot like you have it spelled in your message.

ksnapshot

I installed mine from the Software Center.

In Fedora I can either open the Terminal window, su and then yum install ksnapshot, or I can go to System > Administration > Add/Remove Software. That's on my Gnome desktop. I can also sign onto the KDE desktop but I prefer Gnome's lean footprint.

oopss i suppose you are right
it was too weird that i could install all kde apps but not that.
as now anyway i get kgrab that is described as ksnapshot but with the addition of several advanced features and a proper gui

The thing works, but make me wonder how would be without a proper GUI and advanced features...
the "advanced features" is apparently only 1 ,a option to print the grab,
and about the GUI i prefer avoid comments..

But anyway is usable

It's a little self-serving, but speaking of screenshots...

PC, I'm curious...what sort of keyboard do you have? I always assumed that a PrintScreen (or PrintScr, as my old HP keyboard has it) key was standard equipment on keyboards.

Also, I get slightly different behavior depending on whether I press the PrintScr key or select Main Menu -> Accessories -> Take Screenshot. Pressing the PrintScr will grab the entire desktop; using the menu I have more options:

A quick look at the menu entry for the Take Screenshot accessory shows that it is launched with the following:
gnome-screenshot --interactive

So, you could right-click on your taskbar, select Add to panel, and then select Application launcher. This should allow you to scroll down through all the menu entries. Find the one for Take Screenshot and viola! it is now on your taskbar.

i may try to open the virtual keyboard ,it show the keys in english , so if the key was translated (it happened for DEL on my keyboard is called CANC... )i may found the equivalent

Keyboard are not standard
even following the QWERTY standard and so a similar alphabet any language use a slight different keybord
that to insert different set of frequently used special characters,(i.e spanish use a vertically flipped question mark , franch the ç , we constantly use also the "è ,é,à,ù,ì variations of the vocals ("e" means "and" but "è" means "is " as in "he is ")
... and special keys as "del" are often translated so del for delete become canc for cancella...
so sometimes translation of special keys is hard to guess
