Played with Inkscape last night and finished it off with the GIMP. The "hardest" part of this was using a quickmask on the finished picture before adding the dropshadow.
Crossed my mind that this might even make a good beginner tutorial that would show how to use both programs on some basic level.

RobA has a cool Script-fu called Flatting that autofills white surrouned by black borders with colors. Cool spiral by the way. :)

A tutorial would be good, there are quite a few Inkscape folks around here.

I thought I'd try a quick one with RobA's, FlattingTools and a Solarized palette.
If you code the Solarized palette is good to know.

......

Sounds good to me, and it is a good excuse to finally get that tutorial section going on one of my websites

This would make a decent tutorial as well I think for both GIMP and PS.
This picture http://min.us/lbfIAda3l8qGoi was done with the GIMP before I had PS (I took the orginal and did all of the changes), but admittedly there are some faster ways to accomplish the same end result than my route for this at the time and the look can be effective with the right source image.
