I installed G'MIC 1.5.2.1 on my Windows XP today and when I invoke GIMP I get the message:

"The procedure entry point gzdirect could not be located in the dll zlib1.dll"

This message appears once, then I briefly see a DOS-style window appear, then this message appears again. G'MIC does not appear in the Filters list.

I installed G'MIC in GIMP 2/lib/gimp/2.0/plug-ins.

This worked with previous versions. Is anyone else seeing this problem?

zlib1.dll should be in your bin folder,
C:\Program Files\GIMP 2\bin\zlib1.dll

Check your user plugins folder for a copy of zlib1.dll,
C:\Users\[user]\.gimp-2.8\plug-ins\

If you find a copy of zlib1.dll in another Gimp folder other than bin, rename it zlib1.dll.old and restart Gimp.

G'MIC can be in either,
C:\Program Files\GIMP-2.x\lib\gimp\2.0\plugins\
or
C:\Users\[user]\.gimp-2.8\plug-ins\

Thanks! It seems the .exe I used to do the install didn't put it in the correct place. I also tried installing from the zip file myself, but since there are no installation instructions I didn't know some files had to go in a different place. A README would be really useful in this type of situation. :)

There should have been a readme incuded in the zip file, more info here with a handbook and tutorial.

Unfortunately, from what I've seen, none of the zip files contain readme files. The poor user is generally left to their own devices on figuring out how/where to install G'MIC. I believe the .exe installer for 1.5.2.0 worked OK (at least I was able to use 1.5.2.0 easily), but the current one seems not to.

The page you pointed me to on sourceforge has minimal and not terribly useful install info. Also, it appears that the install links point to older versions, not the current one.

The readme from this link is attached to my last post.

Ah, I didn't see the attachment. Thanks.

I don't remember seeing a README in that file list on SourceForge before. Unfortunately, for Windows it just says to install it in the plugins folder. It doesn't say anything about bin. The README should probably be updated for the new version.

It is not much relevant if the dll was in bin or in the plugin folder i believe your problem was having 2 zlib.dll instead then only 1

In that case you would have the same message about "missing" dll but the soluction would be delete one of the 2

I think there is a misunderstanding regarding my mention of the bin folder.
When you install G'MIC all files go into the plugins folder, the readme is valid.
The only folder you have to worry about is plugins.

I only mentioned the bin folder regarding your zlib1.dll issue. If after you install all of the G'MIC install files (which includes zlib1.dll) in the plugins folder and still have a problem, post back.

OK. Sorry for the misunderstanding and total confusion.

In looking at my currently installed 1.5.2.0 (which works), I see a zlib1.dll in the bin folder. There is NOT a zlib1.dll in the lib/gimp/2.0/plug-ins folder for this version because the zip file didn't include zlib1.dll.

For now, I'll stick with the working 1.5.2.0 because I have to write a review of G'MIC and I don't want the new version to possibly slow me down. I'll try the new version later on.

Thanks for all the help!

Here's what David Tschumperlé (the author) says (for anyone else with the same problem):

"I've put the zlib1.dll in the plug-in folder because if I remember well this file was not present in some previous gimp versions (and the G'MIC plug-in needs it!).
I suppose that if you just remove the zlib1.dll file from the plug-in folder, that should work as expected (the plug-in should be able to find it in the other directory where it is).
Not sure about that anyway, but feel free to try, this dll is pretty standard I think and there are nothing specific about G'MIC in it."

I just found this plugin searching for Topaz for GIMP and it's pretty cool. Unfortunately the newest version I installed does not have Graphic Novel or Graphic Boost. Those are two of the ones I were really looking forward to using. Hopefully someone can help me out so I can use these cool features. Thanks.

EDIT I cannot post the link to the page to show which two that are missing because it says my post looks too spammy for a new user and remove the link.

The download links on that page are old. Download from here:

G'MIC downloads

(I can't vouch for 1.5.2.1, but 1.5.2.0 has Graphic Novel and Graphic Boost 2.)

Make sure the Internet box is checked and press the double-arrow key to the left of it. This will download the latest user-created filters. I did this yesterday and my filter list has 425 entries now.

Thanks again, but unfortunately that didn't work either. Sorry. I got this error message.

Yeah, sometimes you get some of those errors. The filters you want are in photocomix.gmic. I can send you my copy of the file.
