GIMP Version: 2.8.2
Operating System: Windows
OS Version: XP - SP3
GIMP Experience: Beginner Level

List any relevant plug-ins or scripts:
External Hard Drive

I am trying to download the regular version of GIMP to an external hard drive.

The set up downloads to the exrernal drive.

The actual editor always ends up on the hard drive on my regular computer.

I have tried clicking on customize. This did not work.

My operating sytems is XP.

Does anyone know why this may be happening?

Thank you

Hmm. What you mean is that the installer goes to your external drive during the download, but that when you install, the Gimp install tree is created on the hard disk? I'm not sure Windows allows installation of programs on removable media such as an USB disk... If this is what you want to do, dont use the regular Gimp installer, but look for the so-called "portable" versions (see www.partha.com).

Because Windows installer is looking for Program Files directory on your computer to create C:\Program Files\GIMP 2 folder (also creates User Profile ~gimp-2.8) folder. Your external drive is not an independent OS and does not have these directories.
Look for portable GIMP versions, there's a few of them out there.

The only portable version I see in Partha's place is by samj, the link there is a 404 error. If you click the link in the error, it takes you to French only.
I think PhotoComix has a portable version some where.

Kit, are those top 3 of PC's portable? What does lab mean? I looked at that site earlier but didn't see a portable on there.

Yup, 3 top are portable, molly.
Lab - i'm not sure what it means, gotta ask PC. But they include standard version in En,ES,IT, NL, DE, FR and PhotoComix-Preinstalled version. They also have some useful features like taskbar maringouin UI. I have PC's version on flash drive in case i need GIMP while i'm on the go.

@riptide There are no installers, they come as archives, can be unpacked to external hard drive or flash drive and GIMP could be run from there.

ok, thanks for clearing that up. I was going to post that one but I was looking for where it said portable. I knew PC had them though from earlier posts. In fact, I have his portable version on my USB and I use it when I go somewhere with my laptop.

Hy Molly
yes are all easily portable, i just don't wrote directly portable because a little limitation:
may be problems installing along path with embedded blanc spaces (i.e." Document and Setting" has 2 blanc spaces )

No problem installing directly in C (or D, E , F, G... ) or anyway in path with no blanc spaces

About PC_LAB offer 2 ways to start up (each with different possible option for language to use, as computer locale, english, freanch, german..)

One option is start the Standard gimp with no added extra (except Ufrraw to open directly camera files, and added support for Flash animation ) but more complete of the standard version (because support for python script and help manual preinstalled ).

The other is start in ..PC_LAB mode, that will start a version of gimp that already included the most useful script plugin and addon ,included several hard to find and/or install

And not only gimp in general but also several of the included additional plugin as GMIC and the UserFilter were modified to be portable:

Normally gmic will lose all its additional filters and custom presets if used from a external drive, but in this version all the definition are stored internally so it become fully portable
(something similar for the UserFilter also included ,and included with a additional database of a few thousands filters)

When you download a file, your browser download it in the specific folder that you, previously, have set. usually is the Downloads folder in Win.
If you wish download it directly to your HD external you may change this setting in your browser.

I've installed Gimp (2.6.x) in external HD, also in pen drive, and run. I use in my HD external a folder where I've installed gimp and other apps for Win.
Gimp 2.8 doesn't run on Xp sp1 and sp2. You need Xp sp3.
