How do I save or export a file as a .tga or "TarGa image"? I am following a tutorial and it tells me to save in this file format but my version of Gimp (which is the latest version for windows Xp SP3) doesn't have that file extension as an option.

very simple
With the default option for saving (that i believe you didn't change) you

1) click File/Export (NOT SAVE )
2) there write the image name followed by .tga

As example if your image is called "Donald Duck" you should write "Donald Duck.tga"
(and chose where to save

I very seldom use tga anyway i just checked and it works

Ah, yes. Thank you. I guess since I didn't see .tga as an option when I went to 'save' it I just assumed it wouldn't have that option either when you export it. But, it did, so I guess it does support .tga after all.

Yes PC you are right, I didn't know that name was in the dropdown menu either. I guess I never looked before.

That because you try to save..."Save" , Save As" Save a copy will always fail, because save is only for possible in xcf format

For all the others the right option is "Export"

that for a maybe a bit too pedantic imposition of the correct terminology.
Alas , at end the most correct terminology become soon or later the most widely diffuse not that used only by some branch of specialists , but this is another matter...
