Plenty of wood now. lolol

Hope my nephew don't get too mad at me. ;)

Anyway, if only you folks knew how long it took me to figure out how to make these log stacks (been wanting to do this since, PC (I believe it was him) shared a story on a guy that actually did make an image from stacked logs. lol).

Well, another thing conquered. I really need to spend some time studing for my Comtia Security+ exam, but decided to blow off this week and will hit it hard starting next week (do I know the art of procrastinating or what; lol). :)

A very fine result. :coolthup

I am amazed at how this "wooden" portrait looks lifelike, and so curious to know what technique you used for carrying it out. :paint2

Thanks for the words Gino. I first started out with an cropped image no bigger then 500px at the largest dimension (important for a few reasons which I shall explain soon). I ran G'MIC's Circlism preset (reason number one; too big and it can take hours to run; no joke. Even at 500px, it took around 7 minutes) and then I resized it to the final larger dimension (this is the other reason; the resize creates artifacts that are important for the next step). I ran G'MIC's Morphological preset to make the rinds larger to taste (believe it was a radius of around 7 px). I then selected the blacks and made those pixels transparent. I then colorized the rinds to limit the colors to realistic wood texture colors. I then dupped and used motion blur on the base layer to extrude the logs (this technique I mentioned more then once; especially cool for creating lite-brite pins). Then I blended some wood textures for both the base extruded layer as well as the top face layer. Again, not really hard to do but the circlism step kills me. lol

:)

I like it, when I went to the full image reminded me more of the back of a pencil rather than a wooden log, nice results.

If the process was a little cleaner, it would make for cool pencil like results he4rty. Might try to see if I can coax that one later. :)

This is a further demonstration of how the huge potential of G'MIC can be helpful to give shape to an original idea. :)

Thanks Gino; this time, I tried to create rings and outer rine using a few things including G'MIC's Edges offset for the rings. Hope my other nephew doesn't get mad at me either. lolol

That's a lovely effect Lyle. It would be interesting to do that with real logs or flowers or something.

Too lazy to look up the thread, but, I believe PC shared a link of someone that indeed did this for real. It was my inspiration (and at least a year long quest) to figure out how to mimick this in the digital realm. :)

click below for an example of woodpile art (of coarse these logs were cut; lol)

http://stuffofawesome.com/wood-pile-art ... 4.jpg.html

And another (closer to mine, but again, they used chopped wood and I don't see how to do this realistically; only circles. Might try to make a DAP preset, but that really is out of the scope for a GIMP site). :)

lylejk: that's really cool! but you keep saying you're lazy and you still seem to put down a load of work figuring out how to do something the lazy way, isn't that rather un-lazy?

Not really. I believe in the philosophy of think smarter; not harder. If I can automate 90% of my work and only do the 10% nuiance, I consider that being intelligently lazy. lol

Since I've not received permission yet, click here for my current (and in my opinion, best) result so far. You won't be able to see the prevew unless you are a member but, you will be able to click the link that I shared there (which is the complete rendition; only have a 200K limit at RetouchPRO). :)

edit:

Also did one of Phyllis; even better then all my other efforts. Posting here as future reference but didn't want the thread to be pushed up top. :)

Had a little more time today (only have an 8 hour shift this evening; lol) to do some more experimenting. Some of you may recognize this flower. lol

Anyway, instead of motion blur for the extrusion, I used Wind distortion (G'MIC's version; could have used GIMPs, but I already had G'MIC open; lol) for the bark rine before texurizing that part. Also, still haven't figured out how to split the logs, but am experimenting with G'MICs Stain Glass blended to create cracks. lol

:)
