GIMP Version: 2.6.11
Operating System: Mac OS
OS Version: XP - SP3
GIMP Experience: Beginner Level

I have downloaded GIMP 2.8 but do not have an icon for it anywhere.
The only way I can open it is go to an image I have worked on previously which has been saved as a .xcf. This looks like this on my desktop.

Now if I double click on that I get the following prompt:

And that of course is no use so I then go to "Control and Click" which gives me the option to "Open with" GIMP as follows:

That seems an awfully long winded way of opening GIMP!!!

Do all Mac users have the same way or is there a better way?

No stupid questions only stupid answers. :)

When you unzipped the app where did you put it? Not that it matters, but if you put it in the Applications folder, you should see an icon for xcf files and any other files that you associated with McGimp. If you should also be able to right click and see McGimp in your list of apps to open an image file like jpeg, tiff etc.

Note that I tested and built McGimp on a MBP running Snow-Leopard (64-bit). Folks here have also run it on Mountain Lion.

Drop me a line if you are having any issues.

Partha

Hi Partha
Not sure what I did but whatever it was appears to be wrong.
So…….
I started from scratch and downloaded the Clayton Walker version.
This now seems to be in my applications folder with an icon at the bottom of my screen - just like I would expect it to be.
Will start over with my problem images.
Thanks for jumping in and I will drop you a line if I have issues.
Many thanks

My mcgimp put it's icon on the dock automatically. It has never disappeared from there, so not sure how yours managed to get lost. Try a search for it, surely it's hiding somewhere in your file system.
