i followed a path, only Draconian is known to have tried before:
entering the forest of photoshop tutorials and reverse-engineering for Gimp

finally i unraveled the mystery of gradient editing, so gold is to be seen

Nice one, Esper!
I think the Gradient Editor in Gimp is very good. It's definitely worth taking the time learning how to use it properly.

It was in my create > logos menu called Shadowy.
I'm not sure, I think it came with Gimp?

I think I'm more enchanted with the background than the focused image but I like both.
Nice work! :D

thanks Moko

i used a pattern called 'rock by survivorc' but i cant remember where i got it, and my google-fu fails too....:(
so i dont know if im allowed to upload it
if you look at the original tutorial, the texture used looks like something made with noise, but i was too lazy to make one and in my experience real textures (like photos) look better

the highlight is of course a gradient tweaked with saulgoode's excellent alpha-curves technique, which i cant praise often enough !!

Esper - I'm beginning to really admire your work in the "how stuff works" arena. Good job on the gold gradient. I'm afraid I must correct you on one point. I am definitely NOT the first person to explore and reverse engineer a PS tutorial. Rod loves to do the same thing and I would bet the farm that there are many others.

Got a lot of catching up to do reading all these posts over the last couple of months. My OCPD has led me in another direction but I will occasionally drop in from time to time just to see what new creations have been made.

Like I always say....keep on keeping on.

Thanks guys. Probably won't be a regular for a while. I got bit by the backpacking/camping/survivalist bug. Not that zombie apocalypse nonsense, just bushcraft and wilderness survival skills, you know... living off the land type stuff. Not easy to do.

I was an eagle scout and learned a ton of stuff as a boy and my wife and I used to go camping all the time. I'm not talking Winnebago camping, I mean sleeping on the ground or stringing up a hammock, cooking over a campfire, and taking showers from a black water bag that's been hanging in the sun all day to get nice and hot. Susie and I really miss those trips and I am anxious to try some of my new hunting and snaring skills.

My goal is to take a two week trek into the mountains and live in the woods fishing, hunting, and foraging. I will of course take some food but I want to supplement with as much as I can from my surroundings without poisoning myself.

It will take me a while to work up to it and I have a great deal to learn about edible plants not to mention I need to get in shape and lose the flab. I have 20 lbs to lose before my wife and I take our first 3 day weekend trip at the end of May. I think it will be a lot of fun but it will probably kick our butts since it's our first time out in about three years. Wish us luck.

Good for you Drac. If you and wifey are both excited about it, I am sure you will have a great time. Just watch out for the snakes.
