I made a dot brush and named it Dots.gbr. I made it on a transparent layer and it is grayscale. It turned out to be a square brush and I don't want that. I just want the dots. How do I change it to that...HELP Please

Transparent, grayscale, IFAIK its going to be square

Ahh.... maybe look at the spacing, default 10 makes it very solid

I changed the spacing to 100 and it is still square.

I suggest that instead of a brush, you make a pattern using a red dot. Your dots are 6x6, so make an image 6x6 and fill it with a color. Then Image > Canvas Size. You want to add 6 pixels to the canvas size, so make the image 12x12, center it, resize layers > all.

Save it as a pattern.

Ok, thanks. Does this mean I have to make a different pattern every time I want to use a different color? I wanted to use these dots to make that furry worm thing or something furry.

I'd use colorify or lock the transparency on the dots and recolor them. The dots would need to be on a separate layer to change the color of just the dots.

in malgalin's brush tutorial, he uses a white BG (still grayscale mode)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_T4_NDZRqPU
i think somebody explained it acts a bit like a layermask

maybe try that
so grayscale mode, white BG, black dots

 Thanks Esper, I must have been using a different tutorial. Could you post the one you used. I did it over again and mine still has a square around it. Yours works great. :gaah :hoh

The brush is the whole image. If you want only one dot then your brush image should only have one dot. But it looks like what you want would be easier done with a "parametric" brush (those defined by shape/spikes/radius/aspect ratio) with a sufficient spacing.

If the image is in grayscale mode (and not just grayscale in RGB mode), the white corresponds to transparency and the black is the foreground color (so your brush can be colored).

Unless you want a pattern fill, in which case:

- create new transparent layer
- paint the layer with a black brush
- alpha-to-selection
- new layer (important!)
- bucket-fill selection with pattern
- remove paint brush layer

as i said before (and learned from malgalin):
Image Mode: grayscale
white BG layer
create one dot with a (black) filled selection and then clone layer tool for the other dots
merge down
export as gbr

It still ends up as a square though Esper.
This is what I was trying to avoid. I have brushes in my folder that are quite similar and they aren't in squares and I think ofnuts explained it but I don't know if I can do what he said or notl

The brush has to be flattened Molly (ie. one layer and no alpha channel) I believe it is Image>flatten image.

Still can't see the problem but maybe we are talking about different things.

A very quick video - 2.5 mins - going back to the earlier posts

Ok, first of all, that was a very nice mini-tute you did and you have a very nice clear speaking voice...thank you

What you did was very clear and I understand it well, now is there any way I can make them without being square? More scattered the way it shows these other brushes in the screen shot below. One of them is bristles 2 and bristles 3

EDIT: Silly me, I finally got it. I just staggered the dots to get what I want. thanks Rich and everyone else too.
