A concept image for an exhibition that fell through. Space suit is not based on anything existing, it's purely fictional.

MyPaint + GIMP, a few hours

This drawing completely disregards rule #1 of Earth views in scifi drawings: the two Americas (or northern America, for polar views) should be visible :), but it respects rule #2 that says that all earth views happen on the equinox, with a terminator line going through both poles.

The helmet looks quite big (or the head is too small), especially in the back of the head (in helmets (plane, motorcycle) the rotation axis of the shade is normally just above the ears).

Lighting looks spacey enough, and composition help putting us in zero gravity, with no up or down.

griatch: as usual it's very beautiful work. i really couldn't tell if the helmet is unrealistically big or not, but i know i love the design of it! i wish i could see the whole space suit in full because i think it would be a great looking space suit.
for once, though, i can't read anything much into the face. i even turned my laptop ninety degrees to see if that mattered, but i'm still not able to read the expression. would like to hear what the rest of gc makes of this - what do you make of the man's expression?
didn't you make another painting on this theme, by the way?

to me, the expression is sad, like he is trapped out in space and knows he will soon die, never to be home again. It looks like tears are floating from his eyes and his mouth is turned down as if to hold back the panic.

Thanks for the feedback, folks!

Interesting how people read different (or no) emotion here. Maybe it's too subtle ... or maybe that's just the way it should be ... ;)

@ofnuts:
Hehe, good points about the rules of Earth depiction. I'm not from the Americas, I guess that might be colouring my depiction a bit as well. It's possible the helmet is a tad big in the back, I'll have to ponder if I get disturbed by it enough to change anything though. :)

@AnMal
Glad you like the space suit design! I don't think I've done any image just like this before, but I have done a bunch of sci-fi images related to life in space. I guess one more haût-couture space suit is this image...
