I believe the Texturize script has been in each version of GIMP I've had which the oldest, I think, was 1.2x.

Sometimes playing with a script can have some nice results. File > Create > Logos > Textured... is the script I used here.

I ran the script with the default settings in both cases.

The text below was done by deleting all but the top layer; the layer mask was applied and a new, transparent layer was added. The new layer was filled with orange (2e96d1). Both the orange and blue texts are the result of the orange layer. Layer modes changed the color.

When I first started using GIMP, one of the things I would do to learn the program (I didn't have internet access at the time) is comment out the lines in the logo and button scripts which disabled UNDO, then run the script. I would then use the UNDO history to examine step through the operations of the script and learn a little about the techniques used to generate the various effects.

@ Molly & @ PhotoComix, thank you.

@ saulgoode: What a cool idea. Going to have to give that technique some thought.

Ha! I wish I had found saulgoode's idea back in November! What a brilliant way to figure things out.
