Chris, honestly, this looks fantastic to me.
Having two versions (one flat + one lightened) is really interesting by the way.

wouldnt it be a good idea, to turn the top hat upside down, so that the stars are coming out of the hat ?

at the moment i get the message: G'MIC is a gentleman's filter

while what it really needs to communicate is: this is a magician`s hat, filter-magic is coming out of it !

That's a nice idea Esper, especially since the hat is indeed reversed in the two mascot images we already have.

It works too...only the hat is now little bit smaller.

Another idea, now, the top-part of the hat may look like a 'G' if we slightly modify its shape, and so the hat itself could be a nice favicon for G'MIC.
