It all depends on the printer driver. The only ones I can comment on are Canon linux drivers which are dire. As the screenshot best quality is a measly 600 dpi.
Useful for adjusting the brightness for example and of course scaling an image is trivial.
I also have the advanced (paid for) TurboPrint, it does print up to 9600 dpi but does not like using black ink, so prints turn out muddy. The guy at Turboprint - no help at all.
To be truthful, except for DVD's I don't print much. My preference are for panoramas and for those, cheaper to use one of the photoprinting shops that are around.
