The animated border from the lasso/selection tool leaves these little black/white dots when deselected, that don't disappear unless I zoom around. It gets pretty intense when I do a bunch of quick masks to paint/highlight/do shadows. The secondary view especially is covered in them. It's most noticeable on zoomed out documents, possibly due to the lower density of the selection graphic, but it leaves clutter behind in a zoomed in view, too.

You can move the image "off screen" and back in to "wipe" it. It works well enough. It'd be nice if it was fixed later on, though.

Can you post a screen shot of your image?

Esper; I have the latest driver, yeah, but I concur that it may be a hardware specific problem.

Here's a screen shot:

Simon - I have the same issue every now and again with the selection tools.

Ah, I guess I'll just have to get used to them, then. It's a comfort to hear it's not just my setup, though.

It's mostly distracting when I'm inking a whole comic page, because when you're working in b/w, it sometimes just looks like the ink has gotten everywhere.

Maybe someone will come along with a fix.

If this is what I think, I also have these selection leftovers, and when I have them I just double click the window title bar to extend it and double click again to restore its size.. it erases those leftovers (until the next time)..

Ah yeah, anarkhya, that works too. Probably more convenient than the dragging I mentioned.

Glad I can help with a quick tip (:
Also you may try zoom then unzoom with CTRL+mouse I don't remember but if it works it will be even faster to erase the traces.

I have an additional little lasso problem. It's by design more than a glitch this time though.

When you draw a selection with the lasso and you're nearing the starting point, a circle appears around it and the tail end of the selection "snaps" to it. That's quite a distance when you're doing detail work, however, and you don't always want it to just MARCH RIGHT OVER and make a straight line to it.

How do you avoid that? I'm guessing you simply can't get rid of the snapping behaviour all together, but surely there must be a more elegant way to finish off a selection than letting it just sorta.. take a short cut over your lawn?

Hi SimonM7.
I don't see that behaviour on my installation of Gimp 2.8.1 on Win 7 x64bit.

Which method are you using to Lasso? Left clicking and dragging, or making multiple segments by repeatedly left clicking?

I assume you are experiencing this problem using your tablet? Does it also happen when using the mouse/touchpad?

Would it be appropriate to use the 'Quickmask' instead of the Lasso?

fluffybunny

PS Later I will try it out on my desktop computer using my Wacom tablet and let you know the results.

I'm using a tablet and I'm drawing my selections, in most cases to create masks for highlights and shadows on characters/objects. When you're coming back around to the start of your selection, a circle appears that "locks" the ends together if you draw the line into it.

More than anything it's an issue of those circles staying the same size whatever zoom level you have. If you zoom in a lot, it's not a problem because the relative size of the circle becomes much smaller, but there's rarely reason for me to zoom in that far to make multiple selections on a characters face or whatever the case may be.

The result is that I enter that joining circle before I'm done tracing a shape, and the final length (which is tiny, to be sure) "jumps" into the circle. Over the course of making six to ten selections before applying the colour, and always having to "fine tune" each selection at the end, it can become quite annoying.

I suspect that the only way to work around this is to in fact zoom in much further than I actually need, and then zoom back out before moving on to each subsequent selection. It would just be nice to either remove the circles permanently, or temporarily with a key toggle while drawing the selection.

SimonM7, to make sure I understand you, you are creating a lasso based selection, then you create a layer mask from that selection, true?
I suggest you try painting the selection with the Quickmask function, and then create your layer mask from that selection. No snapping issues using that method.
Cheers.

You can find the Quickmask toggle just to the left of your horizontal scrollbar, the small circle shape.

Similar stuff has happened to me before. The "dirt" thankfully isn't part of the image and it can be safely saved. It's just a display bug.

Wow, great tip! Next time my "leaky toolbox" shows up, I'm going to try it.

Confirming that zoom in/zoom out also does the trick, for me (:

I also have this 'pixel dirt' problem, but zoom in/out works for me too! :D
