I have Linux Fedora 17 (x64-bits) and I have my Wacom tablet here that I had installed in Windows.
I have been looking up all kinds of stuff I would have to do to install this into Fedora.
1. driver
Could someone tell or guide me on how I install this. It says on the install disk Pen tablet driver v.5.05 WIN/5.05 MAC. It doesn't say anything about Linux

Question: Do I have to download a driver for this and if so, where do I get it? OR, do I use my install disk that came with the Bamboo?

I found this in Google. It is a command to type into the terminal.
Install the wacom tools package

1. apt-get install wacom-tools

2. dpkg-reconfigure wacom-kernel-source

I also found this in add and remove in Linux.

Molly,

I use Windows, but you can try http://www.wacom.com/customercare/drivers.aspx. They have a drop down for Linux.

Molly:
I run under Fedora 17. Look in your System Configuration Menu if you have Wacom tablets settings.
I had not to install any driver when I installed Fedora 17.
May be possible that you have to connect the tablet witn PC shutdown and start it and then Fedora recognizes yor tablet.

Try to restart the system.

When I installed Fedora I'd not connected my tablet and it was detected as it connected.

I got it. thanks a lot. I just plugged it in and it started.
I had these dreadful thoughts that I might have to do some terminal or compiling stuff. I am working with the pen right now. It is quite awkward, but I am sure it will get better.

Many times is better that you open Gimp using the tablet pen and go to Preferences and set your values in settings.

Using a tablet takes some getting used to... you have to train yourself to look at the screen while drawing on the tablet, when you're probably used to drawing on paper where you look at the paper - so you need some hand-eye coordination here. Try practicing by drawing simple geometric shapes.

Nice to see you getting to use you tablet more Molly; it's a very powerful and useful graphics tool.

Getting Wacom tablets to work under Linux used to be a chore - some years ago you still had to install the driver manually as well as compile a kernel module for the linux kernel. Since kernel 2.6-something that is no longer the case - it's all part of the linux kernel these days (and activated in most Linux distros) and using a Wacom tablet with Linux is trivial. KDE has the best graphical Wacom configurator I've seen under Linux - it's basically equivalent to the Windows version as far as I can tell.

A long time ago I wrote a long instruction for which tablet to use and to set it up in Linux here but since then the linux install things are outdated (although the GIMP instructions may still be useful).

It seems it's quite individual as to how long it takes to get used to a tablet (the tablet/screen dichoctomy). Kids pick it up immediately - I've put kids in front of my computer and they are up and drawing without any problems in only a few minutes. Others might take a day to a week or so to get the hang of it.

Thank you Griatch. It sure does take getting used to.
BTW, how do you change your brush sizes as you are painting besides using the bracket tools. I tried that little thing on the side of the pen but I still don't have any luck with that.

The tablet wheel and other buttons on the tablet give off the equivalence of normal key strokes. Once you figure out which (or configure the tablet to give off the ones you want), all you need to do is the make sure those keys change the brush size in the program (this is the same as in GIMP).

Running the xev program from the terminal will give you a window that reports excactly which key codes are given off while doing different things while you hover over it (the keycodes will appear in the terminal).

Personally I don't use the tablet buttons much since I use the keyboard so much anyway. I just assign the keypad +/- to change brush size and use that.

I think I would like to try this way if I figure how to do it.
