I think there are many posible reasons for the long processing time. I am running Win 7 64 bit, with the standard Windows version of Gimp (2.6.11) which is 32bit. I am running with an Intel i5, quad core processor and 4G of ram. My preview took 2 seconds, so I expected the image to be fairly quick. The image took 6 minutes, 3 seconds to complete. I didn't think of it till I was typing this, but my image was considerably larger (3030x1996). I resized it to 1025x675 and retested it. My preview again took 2 seconds, but the final image took 42 seconds.

What are the specs of the machine that is taking so long?

I know I posted; might have did one of those simultaneous entries and got bumped. Anyway, your small image only took 17 seconds, but after 9 minutes I stopped the large image. Not sure if the issue is with your algorythm or G'MIC. PM has a much better system then me and was able to complete the render (still took 6 or so minutes) . I guess I too needs some additional horsepower. lol

Using the top two images on 2 gig AMD Turion 64 Dual core, using Ubuntu 10.04.

Normal image: preview 4 secs, applied filter 1 min 24 secs.
Large image: preview 4 secs, applied filter 18 min 10 secs. (whoa! wasn't expecting this!)

Some eye openers here:

On my main machine, Fedora 12, 32bit, Intel 2.66GHtz. 2 Duo CPU, 2gb RAM:

Normal picture took about 12 seconds
Large picture took 2.5 minutes.

On my laptop: Fedora 13 and Win 7, 64bit, 4gb RAM, Intel i7, 2.67GHz processor which has turbo boost and went up to 3.33 while running the filter.

The processing times between Win7 and Fedora13 were negligible and could just be my speed in checking the second hand on my clock.

Normal picture about 8 seconds
Large picture: 1.5 minutes.

GIMP version 2.6.11 on both computers.

A 12mp image (4360x2901) took 12minutes and 38 seconds to complete on my machine. I do like the effect though!!

Using the top two images:
Lg [2736x3648] preview 0m 13 s; image 10m 08s
reg[768x1024] preview 0m 13s; image 0m 53s

System:
cpu: AMD Athlon3400+ 64-bit
RAM: 2 GB
OS: LinuxMint9 64-bit
Gimp: 2.6.8 (have not yet moved to the newer release)
G'MIC: 1.4.5.2

My system also does cpu throttling, idling at 1 GHz, 2.2GHz under load.

As PM said, I like the effect. I don't normally use huge images on my system - I rarely go above 2048x1024 - so the times for 768x1024 isn't so outrageous under "normal" circumstances.

My image files frequently get rediculously large. 6000x4000 is not uncommon for poster images. I have some scanned and modified images that are over 100Gb in size when saved as XCF's. My 1Tb backup drive is pretty much full, and now have a new 2Tb drive to start on. Yes I do go overboard, but my artwork (Gimp in particular) takes up most of my waking hours.

As for the presets you should have a .gmic_faves file (in same place of your gmic_def-xxxx file) you may just copy the presets and paste there
In case you have not that file just save the presets with name ".gmic_faves"

You guys will have to let me know how it all works. My wonderfully powerful $800 Sony Vaio died! It's only 30 days old!! Brought it back to Best Buy and if I'm lucky I'll get it back in a few weeks. The people there were pretty bad so I will be sending a poisoned pen letter to their corporate office!

I will try using an old laptop to at least get online and do some minor Gimp work. This typing on an old phone is for the birds.

Greg, was your laptop getting too hot and powering down?

Yup; looks like PC's filter overtaxed the laptop. lol

Laughing with you and not at you Greg. BB should replace it. The laptop probably had a defect that was lucky enough to show up as early as it did. :)
