Post subject: How do YOU arrange or position YOUR Gimp Windows?
PostPosted: Sat May 04, 2013 8:43 pm  (#1)
I am always curious when I see other members post screen snapshots of their Gimp application at the variety of arrangements and different open dialogs.
I understand that your particular screen resolution is the limiting factor in most cases but I am sure people have made their choices based on 'ease of use', productivity gains etc
Would be curious to see or hear the reasons from others in the membership.

Here is my layout when painting in Gimp.
You may want to save the image to view it full size as my Win 7 desktop is running at 5760x1080 resolution (3 x 23" monitors in nVidia Surround)

I like a lot of real estate when i create. That is the reason i do not place anything under my tools.I just squeeze them as thin as possible.
I normally will create mostly text type creations.I hardly ever paint or do photographic work. That is the reason i have the tabs setup the way they are.
Layers,Paths,Channels,Brushes,Gradients, Fonts, and patterns. All locked in place, and all have ginormous sizes. :lol
I also have the error window tabbed so all errors go there instead of a new window.
Everything is basically set to the right. I do this because i am right-handed.My eye auto looks to the right. It is just faster and more convenient for me.
If i could find a way to set everything to the right (a tabbed toolbox would be awesome) i would. :bigthup

As I mainly work on scripts I always have an 'error console' open and I like to keep all my major plugins along the top where they are easy to find

Rod the Tab key still functions in single window mode and will instantly increase your window size

This is my layout.
Dual monitor set but always using single-window mode and never felt need for a new view.
Big screen gives me enough room for image area, got rid of some tools in the tools panel to make it slimmer.

What I'd rather have is the ability to have 2,3, etc. instances of GIMP opened and
customizable workspace presets I can choose from and change on the go (like in Blender, 3ds Max)

Single window

Since my screen is quite small on my laptop.

This is a pretty much out of the box set-up. It's nice and easy to work with and nice and easy to see, for me anyway.

One big dock on the right with, from top to bottom:
  • the toolbox (with some tools removed, and some other added)
    • a sub-dock with a collection of tabs:
      • layers
      • channels
      • paths
      • pointer
      • histogram
      • sample points
      • message console
    • Another sub-dock with the Tool options

Thanks Graechan, but i like to keep one dock open always.I just want a tabbed toolbox. :)
Then i would have all my resources tabbed in one docklet. :bigthup

@Wallace: What is the "Ghost" tab at the top? I'm still fairly new to Gimp and have not run across that one yet.

It is a Python plug-in that creates a pattern.
