I've been seeing a lot of fractal art lately, so I felt like dusting off my software and making some of my own.

merrak: :wow :wow :wow this is a knockout! i like fractal art and i love snow, so of course fractal snowflakes would be a hit with me, but quite apart from that it's a very beautiful picture.

Very very pretty. So delicate looking. Two of those spokes would make great dragonfly wings.

That is a wonderful render, merrak!
I've tried Apo a few days ago and no matter what I did the results were quite disappointing.
I have no prev experience with fractal programs and I'm no mathematician by any means.
So maybe [holding breath, stammering] the professor of mathematics from NC will be so
kind to share his magic?

P.S. How did you achieve DOF effect? I can't remember this functionality in Apo.

Thanks.

Thanks for the comments; glad so many people liked it

Although, I wonder if flower petals would've been a more appropriate name...

I used Apophysis 2.09, which I think is the latest version.

I think the blur transform helped create the DOF, since it blurred the outer edges, but not the center.

Other than just an appreciation for what is going on, I don't think knowing any of the math really helps in using the software. There's nothing the math could tell you that you couldn't learn just by experimenting with the software... and that's what I did. I just played around until I got something that looked interesting.

It's all in how much patience you have, and observing patterns.

For instance, today I figured out how to create a linear blur by making a linear transform (i.e. the default new transform) and shifting it.
