flexibility.
When i need just 2-3 Layers and test some brushes, this "all-on-one-side" system is great.
complex manipulation with many layers i put the layer-tab to the right side.
when i want to paint, the setup is different again.

Makes me wonder if anyone created a "setup per project" workflow, I mean swapping/loading session settings for different tasks, possibly automated thanks to an external app' and (now asking too much) real-time ?

Changing the tabs takes just seconds. Mostly i use this one side setup.
Loading different setups automatic would be nice.
