anybody has an idea how to make such a texture ? (the curved metallic looking bands of colour)

Image

it would be best to start with a gradient and then somehow deform

i was thinking Motion Blur, but no luck
i tried G'MIC fish eye...to round
i tried G'MIC Circle transform...near, but not quite there

i think in photoshop this is done with a very extreme bevel
for some reason it begins to distort in the way you see, when you use very high values
it doesnt work that way in Gimp

This is off the top of my head as I don't have a copy of gimp available to me at the moment, but try making a long rectangular gradient and using the filter deform>curve bend.
The only other option I can think of is to use the path blend script.

You might be able to apply 'Lens Distortion' to a gradient. I tried that out and got something close. I use a metallic gradient and duplicated it, flipped it vertically and erased what I didn't want in one of the gradient layers. I also had to scale the gradient a little once it was stroked, to fit the text.
Sorry but I didn't save my results, but it was very close. I also added some HSV noise to the gradient after I did the curve.
I did it again to show you what it looks like.

These were done without flipping or duplicating the gradient and removing unwanted stuff.

Here's another that I did using a step gradient.

You might have to create you own gradient to make it more exact.

he4rty: i tried the curve bend previously as well and didnt like the results very much, thanks for the suggestion ! :bigthup

Wallace: this is very very close to what im looking for, but i have problems replicating the effect
we are talking about 'Filters -> Distorts -> Lens Distortion' here, right ?

if i set Main and Edge to the minimum (-100) and Zoom to about 20 i get something like this, which is kind of close to what you did, but not really the same

Image

can you please repeat your effect, and tell me the values you used ?!

I created a tutorial on one way that I use to create curved gradients in this thread.

Esper, I'm not sure if this will work for you but have a look at (4.3.3 Gradients) combining gradients at Grokking The Gimp.

Your Main and Edge settings are good, except for 'Zoom'. I'll take a screenshot, to try show you what I did. The gradient used is also important. ;)

This is the image I came up with...
Image

Here are the Lens Distortion filter settings I used...
Image

I also applied the 'Posterize' filter to the gradient, to break it up into more lines of color, (although you may find this isn't needed. 'Posterize' can also be applied before or after the Lens Distortion filter). Apply a mild 'Gaussian Blur' to the resulting gradient.

I've included the xcf file that will show how I create the effect.
Scaling the gradient to then fit the text, is another thing I did that can be seen in the xcf file. Scaling the gradient down to fit the text, can help to form the shape needed for this effect.
I hope this helps.

Maybe I should think of putting together a tutorial on exactly how I did it. Just a thought... If any of you guys are interested in a tut on this effect let me know.

Go for it Wallace, I'd love to see more info on gradient techniques!

I'll see what I can come up with. I think a video would be best, although I could do a tut with screen shots.

yes please, i tried some more, but i found it hard with the filter
maybe a new G'MIC filter could be written for this effect

Without any fancy tricks or borders, just the curved gradient. Made the gradient as a layer, then took the curve bend tool to it. Squeezed the middle and this is what I got.
