I had to crank up the displacement to 127 to make it that spiky.

Wow, thanks everyone for your input. I had no idea this thread would get so involved.

I made this and put the Grateful Dead motif over it just to see what it looked like. Not bad. I was not expecting to be able to match their gradient exactly but I'm more than satisfied with the results. Mine was done completely in GIMP.
