Loading images into my pattern file works perfectly. But there are some really interesting patterns that are in a ".pat" file. Can I use these in Gimp 2.8 and, if so, how?

Thanks in advance.

.pat files can be used wherever a pattern is required (wanted)
to see it on the screen standalone, open it as image

You probably have a Photoshop pattern file, which has the same .pat extension.

There (was)/is a plug-in that will open a PS .pat as an image
Then export in a suitable format for Gimp.

For Windows try, http://registry.gimp.org/node/11003

I think there are more recent Windows versions, maybe someone here can point to them.

edit: looks there is one here:

Try XnConvert for Photoshop .pat to GIMP conversion.

I use ps-pat-load 1.0 as Rich2005 posted in his reply, which works fine for opening Photoshop Patterns. Extract the zip file and place it in your user plug-ins folder.

I use Export Layers to handle the layers in the Photoshop Pattern file. This program is useful for other projects with many formats available. Extract the zip files and place the export_layers.py file and export_layers folder in your user plug-ins folder.

Open the Photoshop pattern file. Rename the layers if desired. Go to File>Export Layers, create folder for your new patterns, select GIMP Pattern pat file extension, Export Layers, enter the Pattern Description. Export to folder.

Place the new pattern folder in your GIMP user pattern folder. This is the quickest, easiest method I know for converting Photoshop Patterns to GIMP.

Note: You can use png or jpg format for patterns but I prefer .pat for Description sorting purposes.

Files Needed:

Photoshop Pattern Load 1.0

Export Layers 2.5
