Combining two images

1) Failed how? Any error message? If necessary start gimp in 'verbose' mode and you may have more meaningful (at least for some of us

) messages in the message window.
2) The memory stick could be read-only (because of a switch on the side, or because of some hardware error). Open in it your file explorer and try to create a file/directory on it...

The stick works fine. And the Error Window reads:

Hi guys... I'm sure Wallace is watching this thread with keen interest.

Carefully, step by step... here's what I tried:

Press Control and open two images as Layers.
Add Alph Channel to both.
Scale one image to conform with the second image.
Add Layer Mask to forground image
Size and select Paintbrush
Sweep out unwanted areas
Zoom in and clean up
File>Export As
Under Places select OS (C:)
Deleted Name and .jpg File Extention
Re typed Name and .jpg File Extention
Open Users and opened my file by selecting my computer password b
Open Downloads
Hit Export
Export Image as JPEG (not JPG), window opens and I hit Export

And this window appears as a Gimp Message:
Saving 'C:\Users\b\Downloads\yes.jpg' failed:
JPEG image plug-in could not save image

This all seems pretty straight forward to me. But I'm struggling, here.
Any ideas?

Can you try exporting the image as a .png,
instead of a .jpg/.jpeg.
Just to see if this error occurs when exporting as a .png.

Damn! Wallace! ....I did six experimental tests last night, saving the files as .png extensions to my Downloads folder. They all were saved and I could access them and copy and paste them.

So what's up with JPEG?

That's good.

Could be a bad .dll file of some kind,
but I'm not sure which file it might be,
or if this is the actual issue.

If anything,
you might want to do a completely new and clean installation of GIMP.
This would be the easiest,
instead of removing each .dll (Dynamic-link library) file,
one at a time and testing the export as function.

My last suggestion for this issue.
Would be for you to do a completely new and clean installation of GIMP.

Make sure you download the latest GIMP from gimp.org.

I've got the latest version on my desktop ready to go. But my question is about the Profiles. My thinking is first uninstall the present version of Gimp. Then go into profiles and remove anything pertaining to Gimp. Then do the new install.

Is this consistent with your thinking? Am I missing something? I really don't want to screw this up.

You need to do a clean installation.
This means that,
you need to do a complete uninstall of GIMP.
Before doing the new installation of GIMP 2.8.22.

If you want to save your current GIMP .gimp-2.8 profile folder.
Cut and past it somewhere,
so that you can use it later.

Hey Wallace... guess I'm a .png guy from now on. Uninstalled Gimp. Deleted file from Profiles and reinstalled the latest version of Gimp. And it still doesn't like my .jpg's! Go figure.

Anyway, like I said, .png works fine.

If you'll remember, before I got you into this mess, I was asking about placing a light wash of color on the downed plane pix that I attached in Post 9. Would appreciate it if you could nudge me in the right direction.

By do this,
you're more likely to get answers quickly and from many sources,
other then myself.

also occurs on the other computer you use GIMP with?

I only have GIMP on my Asus Model K53E with Win7 which I hope to be changing over to a Linux distro in the near future. I've been looking at Mint and a few others but still undecided. I have become less and less enamored with Bill Gates as time goes on.

You could try this experiment/test,
to see if you're able to export as .jpg/.jpeg.

^1. Create a folder somewhere,
say within your Downloads or Pictures folder and name it test_export.

^2. Open the image in GIMP.
When exporting from GIMP.
Be sure to navigate to the newly created folder.
Attempt to export the image as a .jpg or .jpeg to this folder.
