That concerned me also, but I could not get them on the first one which has no additional work.

I will do it again, I may have made a math error! (Oh, there goes the brain again!)
Edit: My math was correct so I made an error with one of the layers, could not figure out which one though. Re did it. It was very dark, even though I used lighter settings.
Added a gradient to try to improve it.

Pat, if you post the original source, someone can try to reproduce the steps.
(BTW, this is a general note for the gimp-chatters, not just for you: if you encounter some difficulties in creating an outcome using a filter or a tutorial, it's a good choice to post always the source, to allow other people to help, whenever possible)

IMHO there is one "effect" error: the bottom part of the image does not look as "water", you could have chosen strokes with zero angle for that area (you always apply modification to the "classical" tut, so nothing …particularly "heretical"!). All the remaining effects are very nice.

Don't know what you mean by this. I don't understand it.

Simply that in the tut the angles are 45 and 135, so 0 is "heretical", but that's not much different from the other "extras" you apply to it.
