Happy Accident with GMIC

I dont remember how I stumbled on this combination, but its one of my favorite effects that I use a lot

Its easy! set an image with a transparent background

Click on Dream smoothing, then >Details< Dcp Dehaze

It leaves a kind of distorted smoke look

Very nice results Norseman. I find happy accidents with G'MIC all the time. An extremely powerful preset/plugin for sure and it's usefulness has no ends with me. I usually use something in G'MIC for all of my edits now.

I've always been a fan of G'MIC's Dream Smoothing filter.

When combined with the G'MIC's Dcp Dehaze filter.
You produced an excellent outcome.

Nice outcome! Same here, like dream smoothing, graphic boost, graphic novel and similar filters a lot.
Try out dream smoothing + graphic boost or graphic novel that's one combo I've been using.

I decided to try playing with this myself and I came up with a freaky situation. I took my seagull pix, isolated and removed the background. I copied the visible image which was only the gull. When I try running the Dream Smoothing on the image, it miraculously restored the entire image. I saved just the gull as it's own xcf file and restarted Gimp figuring that nothing would be held in cache. I reloaded the single layer image, which was just the gull and the transparent background. When I ran the Dream Smoothing filter, it again restored the entire background. What the ???. I'm going to try it again, saving a copy as a png.

G'mic probably doesn't use the same cache as GIMP.
Maybe try reboot the computer and run again.
If it still does it, cool to try do dreamsmooth on one image,
close it, rename another image (already isolated) to the same name
and try again. Can't wait to get home...

Seems to me more like when the image is cut, there still may be information
in the image file and the dreamsmoothing brings it back out to some degree.
I forgot to test to see how much if any the file size changes after being isolated,
and I don't know anything about the structure of image files.
It is not stored in cache memory... tested. Thought it would be cool if it was.

I saved my cut out image as a .png file and reloaded the .png file. It worked ok then.

Yah, Me too

I use GMIC almost all the time

Its funny I hardly ever use any of the filter built into Gimp

I use some of the scripts people make here, as well

I like graphic novel when I want less distortion than Dream smoothing goes.

paste it in a new window
