photo comix: again, some really stunning patterns! image 4 and image 15 (i think i've got the numbers right) are my favourites.
have you tried playing with rangoli/kolam? i usually prefer the patterns and designs from moslem india, especially from the mughal period, but i love rangoli designs.

I like all these colors are bright, cheerful. This whole entire technique maintains the harmony of colors, even with the reflections (mirrors) and everything else.

Moslem usually ban figurative representation of divinity and more in general figurative art ..so they focused on pattern and abstract decoration with beautiful results

Yet i dislike limitations and for pattern i like that they may include , or derive from figurative (here opposed to abstract) representation

Also i would hesitate to tweak symbols of other religions ,even with the best intention the risk to ...do something that may be felt as blaspheme would be too high.

But the most Holy Hindu symbols and even Gods may be rotated, flipped , mirrored more freely , because their nature:
are already mirrors , reflex of something can't be seen or described directly in its totality, and each of those contains at least 2 polarity , Rama is completed with Sita ,
Ganesha for some reason is seen as a single in Southern India but for the rest of Hinduism is a whole with Sarasvathi and Lakshmi (or even with Buddhi and Siddhi .. i like so much possible versions all representing with different colours the same things )

PS AnMal did you see "Sita sing the Blues" ?

I did not known about ,i just stumbled over and at first i frowned for the very "cheap" animation
but in a few minutes i was totally hooked ... I LOVE it !!
... and contains the most funny interpretation of the Ramayana i never seen

photo comix: i totally understand not wanting to use symbols from other religions too freely. patterns and design from moslem india isn't usually religious in nature, though, so i have no scruples with them . and maybe you didn't understand me about the rangoli designs - they are hindu designs and if you haven't already discovered them you should, i would love to see what you make of them! i haven't seen "sita sings the blues", but i already had it on my list of films to see. i always liked the ramayana story and i found clips of "sita sings the blues" on youtube and thought "wow, i have to see the whole of this!"

and you know what would happen for Christian symbols ,just as example if you put a cross upside down , even a empty cross , everybody would believe you a Satanist ...

And i fear that something similar may happen if flipping or mirroring that beautiful muslism decoration that often are sutra so basically extract from their Holy book:

those plague but for its own nature they have less fertile soil to grow

- actually, pc, that is a device used in islamic art already . have you seen kufic calligraphy art? in kufic writing you can place the text (traditionally quran quotes, but these days also poetry and other quotes) in any direction. it's very decorative, but i've been told decorativeness isn't a goal in itself, kufic calligraphy is a form of mysticism.

i think with any religious symbolism - be it christian, hindu, buddhist, moslem, jewish, whatever - you need to know what you're doing if you're using them, but as long as you can motivate your use of it and show you've made an effort to understand what the symbols stand for there's no need to be afraid. but really, when i say mughal art and design isn't usually religious in nature i mean it. there are calligraphed here and there, of course, but that's not a prominent feature in the mughal style. if you really are concerned about using mughal designs you shouldn't be, you're depriving yourself of a lot of fun then - and the rest of us too, because we don't get to see what you make of it .
