The idea was play with the new Gmic Kuwahara filter, i tought this Puffer Fish
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Aroth ... Hawaii.jpg
would be good to test

The first results were promising...

Image
pesce_000029 by PhotoComix_Mandala, on Flickr

then why don't try to combine with one of the gmic edges filter ?
I mean create 2 duplicates , apply kuwahara to the first, an edge detection filter

well the only adapt apparently was the first filter of that list "Gradient norm" (used with "negative" option
but the result was sort of bleached...)

Image
pesce_000016 by PhotoComix_Mandala, on Flickr

But after correcting the level (using Automatic option ) was looking much better very close to this

NOW THE REAL FUN THE COMBINATIONS:
image 1 & 3 (or 1 & 2 ) merged with different layer modes

Multiply

Here the Kuwahara effect is less visible but the combination still nice ( lightness may be corrected )

DFFERENCE MODE looks as a negative...will create a nice positive ?

pesce_000009 by PhotoComix_Mandala, on Flickr

...YES !!

The darkest (i believe Burn mode)

Image
pesce_000008 by PhotoComix_Mandala, on Flickr

BW (now not sure if was value or saturation mode )

Image
pesce_000007 by PhotoComix_Mandala, on Flickr

 no bad at all
but i saw that a additional passage with graphic give an extra kick,
for the test i just apply to all that layers Graphic novel with the default values with no adjustment of sort
See next message for the differences

PS only other edit...2 brushstroke on a transparent layer on top to ass 2 light reflex in the fish eyes, i could not resist doing
but i resisted to add Vamp's teeth

Looks pretty good PC; wasnt' getting the same result as the gluas Kuwahara, but you first one really does look like what gluas would do. Also like your b/w outline version. :)

I agree, Lyle. G'MIC and gluas aren't the same output. Gluas seems to have a little more spread than G'MIC does.

PC: Nice work, btw!

ohhh they do look pretty for puffer fish!! usually they are as ugly as sin! I saw one big puffer bite the blade off a fishing knife when we were trying to set it free...imagine what they do to your fingers...worst part about that was it actually swallowed the blade as well...glad I didnt see more.

well done PC but sorry to hear of your crash

my experiment with mr fish
there's three layers here. One of which is kaleidescope of the duplicated fish layer which had to be scaled :scale after positioning it to be centered over the fishes face and still cover the right side of the image

the other top layer had some other effect the name of which i forgot because i was too excited to get it done

i found Gmic and Gluas Kuwahara equivalent what changes is not the effect but the default, Gluas use more dramatic setting as default

Basically in gmic to get same effect

1 set iteration to 2
2 increase the "Radius"

and you will got a equivalent result (or at least very close ) THAT YOU MAY SAVE AS PRESET (Fav )

@Cecilia

interisting effect looks cool on the BG, expecially the lower half and on the fish skin (but no much sure for the orange shapes ) , it seems to create sort of algae..
