Gmic - Lord Montagu of Beauliu Experiments

well to be exact the experiment were on a photo of the 80th birthday of Lord Montagu of Beauliu, found on wikipedia

and finally i found how got this

MERGED (COMPONENT A + COMPONENT B)

a bit blurred maybe and with a weird effect on the few rebels hairs on the top of the head but still close

that combining the 2 most promising edge detection filters i knowl

none of the edge-detect filters i know does exactly what i wish , that was done combining the 2 closer gmic gradient norm,

each on its layer
than the 2 layer merged in multiply mode,
( on the merged i also used patch smoothing, and is that giving a slightly blurred look )

and is still possible recover some color, merging over the original

that was a sort of spin off, my starting idea was hack the new kuwahara filter , that has the nice effect but can easily simplify too much the image and so i started to experiment also with edges filters

But if the combination with kuwahara didn't worked as i hoped a more simple combination seems promising

simple as duplicate the layer
run kuwahara with quite soft setting, taking care that all important detail are preserved
on the other dup do the same but with higher values. for a much stronger effect
merge the 2 layer in overlay or soft light mode

gmic has several other modes that can give nice results here i tried some other

the head reallly pop out, on some detail would help a quick retouch with the smear or the blur tool (i.e to soften iris edges ) but

but the complessive effect looks interesting
