It's been a while since I had a 'big' painting project, so I decided to paint Daryl Dixon from the Walking Dead!

Came out really nice and the actor is recognizable. Great job!
Question: 1. did you use the path tool for sketch drawing?
2. have you ever tried to draw with paths in vector programs (like Inkscape)?
Thank you.

Thank you, but it's not done though, there's still a LOT to paint :P
I didn't use the path tool for the sketch here, but I do use illustrator sometimes for school.

Thank you Erisan!

Though I think that something isn't right.. Maybe it's his eyes or mouth? Anyway, if anyone knows what, I'd be happy to hear :D
Here are some photos of him, for the ones that doesn't know him or doesn't watch the show:

I think you are doing a really great job on it. i to also draw and paint with my mouse when i use gimp.

I think it would be hard for me to say what may be wrong with your painting seeing how it is a W.I.P. and i will bet you are working with photos to do this piece of work. So it might be a help for us if maybe we had a side by side comparison of the photos you are working from with your painting. That's if the photos you posted of this actor are not the ones you are using to paint your picture by. I hope you understand what i am saying. I do know with portraits if you don't get the eyes just right it can throw off the whole think. even if you get the other features right on the face, if the eyes are wrong then the picture doesn't look as close to the person as it is suppose to be. Being a artist my self, i would need to see the picture you are working from beside your work to be able to say what is wrong if any thing. But like you say, It's a work in progress and sometimes things just don't look right til you are finished. i will say so far that the shading around the eyes may need to be blended with the skin tones a little more. there seems to be a hard edge there making it look almost like a mask instead of shading. but i wasn't sure if you were done with that part seeing how it is a W.I.P. I still would love to see a side by side comparison of the photo you may be working from to your work.

But i think you are doing a really nice job with it.

I think the eyes are great. The sacs under his right eye could use more blending between the upper cheek bone and the dark shadows under the right eye. It seems to be too sudden.

Nice painting BaukjeSpirit...

I have a 'Gimp-Fleshtone-Color-Palette' that's available for free @ deviantArt, if you or any one else is interested.
It has a lots of colors, there's over 300 colors on this palette, most of which are flesh tones. There's also colors that can be used for lips and eyes.

Thank you all! I fixed the eye, it already looks better! But still there's something that doesn't seem right to me :P

rdgracer71: Here's the reference I used http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb2 ... es_001.png
Also know that I don't intend to paint the same lighting from the reference photo.

Wallace: thank you for sharing! But I really want to get better at painting, and I really believe finding out myself is a good way to do it :)

i wished i knew how you did the hair. that is very good. and i find that doing things my way is better than doing it someone else's way. i wish you luck in your painting. i like doing portraits. but have never done one in gimp. but may try one someday. i would just like to share a piece i did with color pencils. and trust me i am not trying to high jack your thread. here is my colored pencil drawing of my girlfriend.

baukjespirit: i think the portrait looks really great as it is. i've looked at the three photos you linked to and i could see a likeness to your portrait in any of them (never seen the series or seen the actor in anything else), so he's obviously recognizable. if you're working from the last picture you linked to, though, i think you're making it hard for yourself if you paint him with his mouth closed. in the photo it is open and that is important for the expression in his face, it will probably take a lot of extra work to get an expression you're happy with if you change a detail like that and still work with this particular photo as a reference. i also think that while the eyes look really good both as eyes in general and as a likeness to this actor's eyes, they don't look like they go with the expression in that photo. if you want that particular expression you could take a good long look at the angle of the shadows around his eyes, i think the shadeows you've painted, particularly around his right eye (the one closest to the viewer) make his eyes slant a little upwards instead of a little downwards. but if i were you, i'd probably just forget about that photo and keep it as it is, since it's a good general likeness of the actor and a good portrait in itself :).

rdgracer71: That is a very good drawing, especially with colored pencils! What kind of pencils did you use? It looks so smooth!

AnMal: Thank you very much! I know what you mean, but I liked it more with his mouth closed. But maybe that's the reason that somethings off in my eyes.
I'm getting a little tired of this painting, so I indeed think I'll just leave his expression like this :)
