love the glass block effect...how do you get the transparency in it but keep the colors?

Basically I have halved the size of the PhotoComix image. I copied it to the clipboard. Now open the landscape picture and add a new transparent layer. In the new layer using the Bucket fill tool select Pattern fill an fill with the image that we had copied to the clipboard. Now return to the PhotoComix resized image and add alpha channel and cut the center leaving only the external frame. Copy it to clipboard. In the landscape image and in a new layer repeat what we did with the Bucket fill tool. With the Select by Color tool in this new layer select only transparent areas. Without removing the selection, go to the landscape layer and apply the Bevel filter. Besides I've melt the landscape layer and the first layer in "Overlay" mode and I've played selecting different transparencies in the layers.
I hope you can understand my explanation :)

@2-ton, Sorry for my English, I think your question was for me. I reduced the opacity to 85% in the second layer with the pattern of transparent center frames that I mentioned earlier.

Molly you may speed up using gmic/ regular (or mirror) array

1 open your glass tile
2 duplicate the layer
3 in the duplicate select and crop away the center leaving the frame (the shape would very easy to cut )
Once done unselect (or select) all
4 open gmic

under the gmic preview :
INPUT : all layers
OUTPUT : new image

then look for array /regular array,
chose how much tiles you wish then mark the "extend" box and chose "repeat" as last option

and just click ok

Thank you PC.
I opened the glass tile and did what you said but all the frames are transparent. How do I get a picture in the background. I was only able to put one picture in one frame. I couldn't select all the frames for some reason.

you should have forgot after "clear" the selection active.
so when you run gimp it worked only on the selection , but in the selection were only fully transparent pixel

you may try again first prepare the image with 2 layers the original tile and one with the center removed (but NOT the selection still active )

Then you run gmic to get how much tiles you need

Quote:
How do I get a picture in the background.

hu..you open it as layer and you put in the bg !

let's go in the details:

now you have 3 layer, from the top

1 that with the center removed in all tiles,
2 that with no "holes"
3 the bg image

you may switch off the visibility of 2, layer 2 may be useful to refine but is not strictly needed, the image may look good with just 2 visible layer and switching visibility of 2 off you will immediately see the basic effect

then you may try to switch on also layer 2, changing layer mode or lowering transparency (you may use normal with low opacity, or overlay , color...

but if you

Maybe i found a good use for my 3D fractal :
our formula wizard ,Darkbeam found how to create house but only a house with no windows

no windows in the shape at least, but with a similar pattern used as map i may try to wrap windows around the house:
from a house with no windows to a house with all the walls made of windows,, a bit extreme but i want to try

Ok, mine doesn't look as good as YAFU's. I just wanted to try it. Using the background image, I applied mirrored array, then Photocomix's Seamless Deco, and you know the rest. Thanks YAFU and Photocomix.

the glass grid after mathmap rect2ellipsoid

Image

PS to get same effect in MM Settings tab the "edges behaviors" should be on "reflect" for both x and y ... or you will get empty corners
