:gaah am i the only one who gets nothing but spaghetti or larvae in the lava filter? what pictures do you guys start from? no matter what i change in the settings or what picture i have started out with i only get spaghetti (= long, white lines, more or less tangled up) or larvae (short, white lines, more or less tangled up), with far too little red, yellow and orange around it. if i use the relief light on it i get no real effect out of it because all the areas that get highlighted were white lines anyway. :hoh this is extremely irritating and i demand to know why erisian, gino d and esper all get nice looking lava when i don't!

Yes, the G'MIC's "Lava" filter always tends to produce textures reminding of spaghetti, so the problem could not be attributed to it. Indeed, the trick for transforming those thin strings into bowels is to change some of the settings provided by the "Relief light" filter, where it is expecially important to set the "Image smoothness" slider to a higher value than the default 0.00 (for example, 1.00 is an appropriate choice).

Anyway, in my previous post I attached a detailed explanation on how to operate to obtain that particular result.
Take a look:

esper and gino d: of course you're right, i bow to your greater knowledge :hehe. the problem was that no matter what i do in the relief light filter i don't get anything similar to erisian's or your results. i had to run the filter twice on the same layer before it had the same effect, but now i can make innards or amber looking text as much as i like :).

AnMal - it might be relative to the size you are working on. I worked originally on 1024x1024 at 300dpi.

Molly - I tried some text.

erisian: looks like bacon text, not very gruesome at all.

i haven't really tried on a blank canvas that size, though i have ran the filter starting from an image on larger than that - don't remember if it realy made a difference, so i will have to try.

i just found out: you can get the same effect without the lava filter, and use the 'Seamless turbulence' instead
that way you will get grayscale innards

Ah sorry. I hadn't followed the link at the time - I thought I would come back to it if I had time at the end of my session.

I did something similar a few years back, but don't remember how I did it. I think I found a tut on it somewhere:

the warrior: nice slimy stuff :). do you remember if there were any scripts involved or anything? i like the effect of the plasti-wrap script and the g'mic relief light filter, and i have been thinking it would be nice to know how to make it manually too, so if that tutorial was on how to get the effect manually i'd start hunting for it!

my guess is, you cant

i think some filters are just mathematical stuff

but you could ask Rononours, as he wrote the Relief Light filter

I actually found the link later last night. I guess it's okay to post this here: http://www.gimptalk.com/index.php?/topi ... -tutorial/

the warrior: thanks for the link! they used the plasti-wrap filter, though, so no help with the manual making of the effect there. maybe esper is right, but it seems like there should be a way to do this "by hand" - after all it's only shadows and highlights!

erisian: i'm wondering, which tea would that be - the nice smoky chinese blend that you're so fond of or the ceylon pekoe that you haven't even tried?

esper:  - but to be honest i don't think he was trying to pick a fight here, he was probably using "tea" in the meaning of "late afternoon meal".
