I may be very stubborn but now i would

1 make the black BG transparent
2 duplicate the "Dots" layer,
3 on the lower dot dup: Alpha to selection, grow selection 1px, blur 1 or 2 px
this add outlines to the dot
4 simplify and darken the original , move as new BG
5 New layer to visible+ bumpmap using as source 1 of the dot layer

More long to list then to do...but i am not going to do again (this is your SSP topic, not mine i am just facinating by the possible result,preserve some basic hue from the original in the bg can make the image more readable , without the trick be to evident...)

I did try to create a GIMPressionist preset to do this, but the problem is the result was either too regular (i.e., on grid), or too chaotic.

Sven inspired me which led me to add LqR to squeeze the dots closer together (of course the image will be smaller; future renditions need to compensate for this by starting off with a larger image). Thought I would share the doll result that I did earler with the dots sqeezed even closer giving a better contrast imo. Wanted to share the extra info here to complete the knowledge of this topic once again (as well as SSP of course; lol).

If we could do this on the fly with a script or plug-in, sweetness!

I did have to use the Voronoi program for the dots, but then everything else, including LqR were GIMP filters. I like GIMP. The solution was staring me in the face, but it took some words from Sven to inspire me (why I needed that, I don't know). Strange where one's inspiration comes from. Happy I am since I'm now 98% there. I'm trying to break this binge (did several not just here; lol) but at least it's one more technique acquired. Had to figure out another reason to use the Voronoi program other then for TSPs. lol

Thanks PC; posted this one at GIMPTalk before hitting the sack earlier. Thought I would share it here too. LqR's the bomb (need the separated dots for Selection Island Fill to work right; then squeeze the dots closer afterwards; how cool is that?).

No, but I've went to Chris' site before and saw it. Not quite the same as how Ben does it though.

The way you are doing it looks pretty good anyways.

Kilron, at GIMPTalk, made me rethink how to place the dots. Used lylejk stencil preset (thanks to David for preserving this preset for me) to create the more patterned placement of the dots. Might have squeezed the dots a little too close this time though. lol

For these two mods, I selected the background with the magic wand. I grew the selection a little bit and cut it out of a duplicate of the image. Then I just adjusted the levels a bit. On one I deleted more of it and added drop shadow. This could be a really nice effect on some of Lyle's newer images!

Like those PM. Was thinking about going to the 3rd dimension soon enough, but I still wanted to get as close an approximation to Ben's result before persueing the 3rd dimension stuff. Cool you already have a good way to make them now.

Only posting a link since it's not my image, but what you think of this one Mahvin? Working on dimension (but not tiered yet like Mahvin's, but eventually will). Found a cool setting in LqR that better preserves the circles (under Advance it's use a Rigidity Mask; same layer mask used to remove the spaces can be used for this mask making it both simple and cool imo).

The last posted image is better, imo. Not sure if it has to do with there being a large amount of larger circles or placement, but the image you posted earlier was far more detailed. Was your original image too small?

Yeah; I've been trying to figure out a way to make big circles like Ben, but your right that the last one on this thread is better (except for the distorted circles; now I have a solution for that too). I guess I need to use a much bigger image but just the face or no more then the face and torso for the circlism effect to give the best results. Again, still doing my mad scientist experiments and only using empirical methods since I have no formal training. lol

That last image is great looking Lyle.Love the definition, and coloring with the circles.
