You were right, it is a very quick approach to making a ring; so thank you very much for identifying this 'new' tool ( to me anyway).

EDIT - first attempt; now to work on how the various parameters impact and also 'sharpening' the text with this method.

Peter, I do not know your OS, but if it is Windows, you can use the "Snip It " tool included in the program. it is very easy to use.

Finally worked out how to use the 3d Extrusion filter. But will need to learn to make rings as nice as I have seen here. Am unable as yet.

A ring of gold wooden rings made from a combination of Aussie timber e-maps and gradients made from local sunset photos.

Instead of another gold ring, I created a
gold cross for an image I posted at devIANT ART.
I used racer-x's method of 3D extrusion in G'MIC.
Works really great. Opens up new possibilities.
