Obey ?

i made this in circa 30min, so its far from perfect
its of course inspired by looking at loads of Shepard Fairey (aka Obey) images and then byteweiser's Hope tutorial on youtube (which is actually for Inkscape, but i made my version in Gimp alone):

the key is really getting your original image right for the job
i used G'MIC smooth (bilateral) and then saulgoode's Quantize script basically

then seperated the colours with the pick by colour tool and initialize a layermask from the selection
and added a few grids from my filter stripes tutorial:

I don't know much about what you were going for but I like it, it looks kinda 70s-ish to me.

Shepard Fairey = Obey (famous street art guy) = the guy who made the Obama Hope poster

yes the guy in the image is Jeff Bridges aka The Dude
the video tutorial uses the same image and theres a link in the comment section

i was just trying the technique
the nice thing about it is, i could change the colours in 10seconds, because every detail is a seperate layer with a layermask

I love it ! Using the same color, but some plain and some with lines, is a very good way to give it interest.

im pretty sure Obey does it all with vector-graphics judging from his style, which makes sense because you can blow it up any way you want and then cut a stencil and spray it on a wall

its easier and more fun to do this mock-version in Gimp because the layermask-technique gives you so much freedom and flexibility

Have to admit I too thought at first glance that it was The Big Lebowski poster :hehe

Excellent technique. Layer masks at their best.
It looks too perfect, Esper, hence, the sense of incompleteness.
Maybe tone down the colors, add some distress look to the bg pattern or vignette?

P.S. On the second look (thought) - I was wrong about incompleteness

its far from perfect...i really made it on the fly
the original plan was to prepare the image in Gimp and then trace it in Inkscape
but then i got carried away :hehe

i think the image has an impact because of the colours, textures and patterns i used, but i see lots of potential for improvement
especially dislike the blotch on his forehead !
oh yeah and the hair looks kind of nice

i think in the future i will try to make a poster in this style for my wall
about time after three years of practicing :mrgreen:

not sure what would be a good motive though

may be you know the filter in Gmic>artistic>Hope poster
but I like yours more

I forget, but somewhere there is a tutorial to do this manually, but it didn't use layer masks or didn't use them completely. I am getting to like layer masks more and more, especially if I think I might be making any changes.

The last link is the closest, but perhaps it was not on this site. It was more like the Hope poster that those examples.
