A his is a little still life image I made for my coffee-drinking father on his birthday. The mug is a little meta, since it actually depicts a real mug he has with my image River Tunnel on it. No references were used.

Done in MyPaint with a little touch-up and adjustments in GIMP. Comments appreciated as usual.

Why day and light outside the window

Great as usual Griatch.

@ gbarkovalev, the light has to come from somewhere.

I can almost taste and smell that coffee. It evokes those sensations.

Coffee is one of my favorite things and I feel the relaxation of sitting back and enjoying the fragrance and sipping it.

Haha I looked at the cup and was like...wait I know this, then I actually read the whole post and was like I KNEW IT!!!! xD

I think the 3 rays of light look good but a little out of place, like they start in a swoop away from where light would come from in the window. - Also, I can't tell if that's a texture or a puddle of water (possibly from steam?) on the table. I'm also confused if this is a glass or wooden table.




I love the colors and the texture in the wall, and the cup seems very symmetrical. I like it, good job!

Did you redraw your picture on the cup or use gimp to bend your already created drawing?

I like your image Griatch, but I'll have you know that I'm a sucker for a good cup of coffee.

Fantastic job Griatch, I enjoy all of your paintings and each one I have seen, has impressed me very positively.
If something to say is about the moisture on the table, as coffee has a darker tone. Anyway I find it fantastic in light and atmosphere created.

Thanks for the feedback Moko! The rays on light on the wall are not coming from the window, they are cast by a window on the other side of the room, probably through some sort of blinds (the sun is actually behind us, the outside will still appear with the same brightness).

The table is intended to be a slightly polished wooden table. When the angle of light hits at an oblique enough angle it will reflect light like a mirror (you can check this yourself against a strongly contrasting light source.

The puddles are just moisture/water spilled on the table to help break up the monotony of the surface. They might have come out a bit too flat for their own good I agree.

I didn't redraw River Tunnel no, I used iwarp and the perspective tool to wrap the original around the mug.


I didn't intend the table moisture to be coffee, but just water. But I can understand the confusion. Had it been coffee it should definitely have been darker, agreed.

Mmm. I can taste it now.
The rich flavor of roasted arabica beans, freshly ground and brewed with fresh mountain spring water for a pleasant afternoon pick-me-up.

That is a beautiful piece of artwork that you have made here.

My dad did enjoy coffee from the real-world equivalent of this mug on his birthday, so he was happy with the card, I think.

I'm not not gebarkovalev, but I think that the image is a little too dark considering how bright it is outside.
