I'm practicing working with simple shapes and lots of atmosphere. Read this one however you will.

here's the story i see: the man has just been let go, together with half his workmates, after many years and now he stands there looking back and wonders why on earth he let the factory take his best years. he's going out in the november evening to take number 174 back home and tomorrow he'll be first in line at the job center.

Also, for me personally it is a perfect reasonable reference for me to strive for as i have got a tablet to practice with/on.

For some reason WW2 comes to mind for me. Or at least that period in time.
I really like the lighting and texture! I like the figure too, looks very good.

I worked on a new layer and used shift-CTRL-click to get a straight line, then duplicated the layer - move layer, merge down - duplicate - move - merge etc. Finally I duplicated and flipped the layer then moved it into position and merged down then erased where I didn't want it.

Thank you. I forgot to mention in my original post that the figure was originally a photo I had taken and cut out and I just painted over it.

I am proud - my head won't fit through the door at the moment!

Erisian, a sweet painting. Love the almost monochromatic treatment. It is a half-full or a half-empty image . I can see hope when I look at the lights and I can see despair when I look at the darks. Very nice.

Thank you wbool, I like your observation. I only really included the lights to add contrast and a focal point to the image but they do seem to have hope in them.

I know this is an old thread, but I was searching Erisian's posts for more of his work and I found this. I love this image. It is a wonderfully expressive scene that evokes (for me) the feeling of a group of American artists around the turn of the 20th century that focused on what they called Urban Realism. It came to be called The Ashcan School, and I have always felt the images were rather poignant.

The top image at this link by Robert Henri is a prime example.

I haven't come across Robert Henri before but I like the style. Usually, everything in me wants to make the fantastic real in my paintings but I often have feelings about the real world that I want to express as well. Thank you for the link.
