Posted a few examples at FM's site of a new process I concocted that I call Metallic Paper look (another HDR like result). I attached a reduced sized XCF so you can see my flow (not going to make a tute; flow should help).

You will need the luma invert script-fu. :)

Here is my quick results using Gmic's Pyramid + Vivid filters, with blending mode set to "lighten only".

Like the pyramid version, racer-x. The technique that I've deployed essentially flattens depth (not to mention some edge artifacts that needs smudging and color artifacts that needed to be re-colored back to normal (unless you like purple telephone poles; lol); still working the kinks); the method you showed has more depth. Regardless. to each his/her own. :)
