d is for doodles! i'm a compulsive doodler, when i take out my old note pads from my university days to see if i can find notes from a certain lecture, i usually find one or two key words, surrounded by doodles . the funny thing is i can remember whole chunks of lectures word for word just by looking at those doodles.
i love looking at other peoples doodles too, when i was at crafts and design school i'd tear out pages from the note pad in our phone booth to save interesting patterns or shapes i'd found. then those patterns or shapes could show up in my jewellery or my paintings or a textile print or something. i save my own doodles too, of course. the mother-and-child doodle in this picture has been used and reused many times over, for example when i made a lullaby collection for my goddaughter and illustrated it with my own photos, then i used the mother and child doodle, nicely framed, on the cover.
this probably looks very easy to make, but i can tell you it wasn't! i worked hard on the recration of felt tips, pencils and ballpoint pen and even tried to recreate the doodle i made using the back of a red coloured pencil once when i didn't have any other pens and the tip was broken . the background is one of my favourite things: white lines grid paper.

i used to doodle a lot too, but i have no scanner, which is really a pity

esper: thank you ! now that i look at it again i'm less than happy with some of the pencil stuff. and i really should have added some shading to the paper from the pressure marks made by the ballpoint pen and especially the backside-of-red-coloured-pencil-thingy.
i don't have a scanner either, but i have photographed some of my favourite doodles and some of them i have traced with the path tools and made stuff out of - the mother-and-child doodle is one of those. can't you post some photos of your doodles for an old doodle junkie? please?

its not exactly a doodle, but something i draw like ten years ago, when i still did my little techno clubwear thing and actually had a scanner

and i tried to trace it with Corel Draw 5 on a 75megahertz pc but never completed

that was a sketch for a stencil for the back of a jacket and looooong before skulls became fashionable

esper: that's really cool! not so much the skull part (it was never my thing, not even before i spent two years in a workshop where everyone seemed to be making skull rings), but the ...hmm.. antlers? bone mess? hair? flames? whatever that is it's awesome, looks almost art nouveauish. actually this whole thing would have looked great as an etching or lithography.

esper: i'm with molly, i think that would be fun to colour! an esper colouring book, wouldn't that be something? but you're wrong, you know - flames have been cliché at least since the sixties and they have been cool from the first time someone decided to draw them and still are. it's all a matter of balance, do the cliché or do the cool.
