i made a birthdaycard for my good friend Holger
was a bit clueless about the theme...he likes eating, videogames and is a doctor by profession
tried to go with a caduceus and some DNA, but that was way to difficult for my meagre Inkscape skills, so i went for the videogames-theme
i also tried to make this much bigger for a change, so maybe one could print it out but boy, this gives a really different feel when you work, as Gimp reacts a lot slower than usual
in the end i regret that experiment, because a nice wallpaper size would have been much better, as Holger wont print it out anyway i guess
and who knows about the colours as its all made in RGB....
i made most of the stuff in Inkscape and put it all together in Gimp

Very nice Esper.

thanks Rod and molly !
the name was done via an interpolation in Inskcape, its pretty simple and quickly done
the gradient-effect is a simple gradient from dark to bright green and posterized (thats a trick i learned from Wallace)
i used the Interpolation script for the stars as well - super easy !
the chrome effects were done in Gimp with a gradient and curves and a bevel
the text "Alles liebe zum Geburtstag" was put on a path in IS and got some Inner Shadow and Glow in Gimp

Ha! I'd love a card like that and I'm hardly a gamer.

Nicely done! He'll love it!

thanks Moko, you have definitely been an inspiration for the card, as i always like your style with the symbols and the nice colours !

Esper - excellent work, picks up well with the video game theme and birthday by the use of the phrase "Next Level", but my favourite part has to be the layered Green text of Holger.

Thanks he4rty and Erisian !
I made a tutorial how to do the 3D text, you can read it here:

Thanks for another great tutorial.
Although I had some familiarity with the basics of Inkscape, I really had not used it for anything practical. Now that I see how much you can do, I think I will spend more time playing with Inkscape.
I kind of went off the video game topic with this, but I had fun with it anyway.

Fantastic results !
Jas45: the white highlights on the black looks super awesome !
i was wondering if anything could be done about the jagged edges, maybe one needs to clean up the paths befores doing the interpolation
but maybe its related to the smaller canvas size.....
i agree about what you said abpout Inkscape, at first i didnt know much what to do with it either
but the more i learn about the program, the more i appreciate vectorgraphics
especially for text its a lot nicer than doing it in Gimp !
K1te: thank you
im glad i sticked to Inkscape although it took me some time to get it and you were the one who encouraged me
good you did !

esper:

nice job, brother!!! who wouldn't want a "level up" card for their birthday? i know what you mean with working at that size - i don't have a problem when i do things like gaussian blur, i'm always doing other stuff at the same time anyway, so i just let the filters run in their own time, but if i have large paths/curves that i need to edit it's sometimes very frustrating. i gave up on a really nice knotwork project because i ran out of patience with inkscapes incredible slowness when i was editing.
jas45: looks good, as usual
