I tried to duplicate but could not get that Lyle magic ingredient
Thanks for the comments folks.
Here's what I do Graechan; I set the Active and below option in G'MIC. I first duplicate, then run the Edges Offset on the base layer. I then click on the Top layer and run the same preset (same parameters again) and set the top layer to darken and merge down (both layers get operated on since the settings in G'MIC; kills two birds with one stone; the base, of course, gets run again). Now I invert this result and copy it; it is my mask. I re-open the target image again, and add a mask layer and paste it. Another step that I didn't share to give a more illustrated result, is to open the target image yet again and dup, run Wavelet denoise (see my settings below) and set the result to Grain extract and merge down. I then do an autolevel on this result, then run Anisotrophic filter (fake smudge preset mention too many times here already) and copy this result above the masked layer created and set it to Grain merge. Dup/blend the top layer until happy then merge all visable. Now I create a base fill of lighter then black (not too light though; to taste) and flatten. I then colorize the result.
