This is my first portrait of a celebrity, he's a Christian singer (pop hiphop stuff) more famous among us kids. :P
But anyways I've only done one other portrait, it was of a lady's daughter and I didn't post to keep the confidence.
I'm new to this kinda thing and coping people and photo references are my worst nightmare so anything you wanna give with the CnC is well welcomed! - I'm not going to full realism but I do want it to look like him, I guess you'd say I wanna capture his essence? It's going to be non hard lined but I might put an outline at the end of the very outer edge when I'm done.

Edit: Finished Image Here.

Sketch:
Image

After looking side by side I think his face is too wide I'll have to fix that I think. I already know the hands look terrible I HATE HANDS! XD - Drawing hands and feet is such a pain I hate it. xD

Update 1 and 2:
Update one:
I've started on his face, it's been taking me hours and his nose and lips will not cooperate with me!! :hoh :gaah
I don't have any lips on his face in this ss because the ones I had looked bad. :S
His lips have pink in them but when I put pink it looks girly....>.<!
And his nose shape is weird, it's so round. :lol - I still use Erisian's "how to paint noses" as a reference it's so useful! Thank you again! :D

Image Here

Update Two:
Okey! I've added a simple mouth, I'll try and fix it later atm I'm mad at it. xD
I tried the reddish idea from Erisian with it but my own way, everything I try with lips he looks like a girl! -.-"
I personally don't even like drawing men so... LoL - I also added his hat and the scarf but I think I'll have to add to the scarf.
After my mother saying his eye looks too big I resized it, I'll have to admit that eye was SUPER big omd. >.<

So...This is what I got now! :D

Image

Update Three:

I had to invert the sketch so I could make his white clothes, so far I've gotten to the hands and pockets.
I also edited the sketch to make the cloths and arms look better for when I color them. - I tried to make his one eye look a little bit more saggy like the picture, I also tried to change the nose a bit and do the mouth like AnMal suggested, I think that looks better! Thank you! :D

The XCF was getting too big so I moved merged and moved the main elements to a new xcf.
I think it's worth noting (Since I forgot. :lol ) that I started in MyPaint but I've done most of the work in GIMP, the starting of the face coloring and eyes was in MyPaint, I redid everything for the hat that I made in MyPaint.
I sketched in MyPaint and edited the sketch in GIMP.

Image

Update Four:
I worked on his nose a bit, I hope this is better! I tried to triangle it off on the bottom and change it a bit.
Also worked on the eye lids and tried to give them more definition, namely the lower lids.
Added the clothssssssss! And worked on the hands. It looks done, but I had some finishing touches I have to add to it to make it come together. I went back to MyPaint a but, the sitch marks and some shading were added using the "sewing" brushes.

So, almost done!

Enjoy!

I think that those who know this guy would recognize him easily from a painting done from this sketch. I wish you the best of luck because I am hopeless at getting a likeness of somebody when I paint. I also hate hands and feet!

Feet and Hands are so hard to draw yet to useful in real life, oh the pain of it all!

:tyspin

I still use your nose tutorial as a reference by the way! Thank you! :D

You're welcome. To colour lips I usually sample the skin colour then redden slightly and darken slightly. I love the way you've coloured the eyes on this.

Looking good so far!

I think his eyes are still on the big side - definitely an improvement, though. I think this eyelids (which don't seem fully open) should take up some of the area you have the eyeball in. In the photo, his left eye (our right) seems to droop. I wonder if he had eye muscle surgery at one point.

I noticed that about his eye. o.o"... I thought he just had a lazy eye, but idk why his eye does that...My mother says it's normal in some angles but I think that's kinda drooping a bit there. Good point about that I'll see if I can make it a little er...lazy looking? xD

Glad you think it looks good so far. :P
:tyspin

@ Erisian: I tried that! Still looks like a girl! It would work if this was a Trish not a Toby. xD

mokonafan: you're doing a great job, sister :)! :hi5 :jumpclap :clap it's a real challenge to draw a portrait of any kind and i think making a portrait that captures "the essence" of someone like you say, without being realistic, is extremely difficult, but it looks like you'll manage to make this a moko style painting and a good portrait of toby mac at the same time. you've made fine progress from your first sketch and to what you have now.
i don't know if any of this will help, but we can always hope :):
i don't think his lips look too feminine, they look like your usual style of drawing mouths and that's fine. but if you want to make them more personally toby mac's lips and hopefully a touch less feminine in your own eyes you could straighten the mid line of his mouth (the parting between the lips) almost completely. the point of his amor's bow is only on the upper side of his lip, if you see what i mean.

noses are a pain!! but i think you're right that it looks a bit too round and maybe it would help if you took a closer look at the angles in his face - his nose in the photo makes a rather clear triangle and the bottom line of the triangle is tilted another way from what you've painted, changing that would make the nose look less round, i think.

love the way you've coloured what you have so far, i think this will look lovely when it's finished!

I wasn't too sure on the line drawing but now you have started to add the colour I agree with AnMal that it has now added that Moko style to the image and I like the results so far.

Thank you! I'll be honest the sketch I posted I wasn't that happy with, I used GIMP to stretch him to be a bit more slender, he looks too square and wide in that sketch. :lol

Yes it's a bit of a different angle, to be honest I couldn't get his jaw-line then when I finally got it I realized it was the wrong angle so I kinda owned my owned self. :lol - But it took me forever and figured I'll probably never get it that good again! xD
I'll look in to it with the nose a bit more, I almost wanna email him just to tell him his nose is hard to paint. xD And his mouth!!! xD

I tried your idea with the mouth! It's similar to what I did with my King Image when I was trying out MyPaint with GIMP, I think it fits him better than the lips I did. Now he looks like a Toby not a Trish. :rofl

I hope I can do the cloths... it's white! Texturing white w/o it looking grey is like pulling teeth out of a Pterodactyl. :hehe

@ Erisian:

:ninja

Thank you! :D

That nose does look hard to draw! There seems to be an almost spherical shape between the nostrils. I think you got that part right, but there's some more structure just above it that you're missing. I think the right nostril (our right) needs to be a flatter, horizontally-aligned oval, while the left nostril (our left) needs to be vertically-aligned - whereas you have it the other way around.

Your irises are great. I think I see now what you were pointing out about my eyes looking dead.

I'll see if I can figure out what you said by the nose thing but I think I get it. xD
Thank you for the help! :D

Thank you about the eyes! :D
I just made a tutorial on how I do my eyes you can see it here: viewtopic.php?f=23&t=8673&p=112015#p112015
