I love it Griatch, Very nice job as usual. You really know your anatomy.
I really get a kick out of the hand holding the flower. I am trying to decide what that little circle is in place of the thumbnail. :teeth

I am sure your mother will love it a lot.

To answer your question, the little circle is not in place of the thumbnail, it is a part of the thumbnail known as the cuticle where the nail is growing from.
