Sallyanne - in my experience the 'lighting effects' filter only needs an image, typically a Background layer, which it uses to process internally as an environment map. I do not believe that it requires a similar spherical e-map as does BRL - happy to be advised I am wrong here though.

My usage of the 'lighting effects' filter has given me some issues when processing - seems to want to only use a Background image layer that was present in the various open images when it was loaded. Under those circumstances I have modified that layer by filling with a 'pattern' to achieve changes in colour/shading.

Thanks. I did notice it was using the 'background' layer

I have never tried the environment maps out before in the lighting filter and it is doing my head in, can't make head nor tails of it. If anyone knows the steps can they let us know please

My understanding is you use environment maps with the Lighting Effects filter if you want. Can use any image layer open in gimp that's I think without an alpha channel. Typically the flat environment maps are used, not the spherical ones. In the Lighting Effects filter under the Environment Map tab you check the box to enable environment mapping and select the layer you want to use as the environment map in the Environment image menu.

There are resources of flat environment maps in the forum or you can generate them with GnuTux's enviromap.scm which is pretty similar to the environment map generator in bevel-reflect-logo.scm but has both flat and spherical options. Leaving Generate Spherical Map unticked makes flat maps.

Examples here:
Environment Map Sharing Thread (Flat)
viewtopic.php?f=12&t=10643

OMG, I think we're doing essentially the same but what you are calling a Background layer I'm calling an environment map :)

Thanks for the font :)

I looked and looked and couldn't find the map you pointed to so used mine. It is lighter and I tried to make it darker with levela but am not sure I did.

No problem sallyanne, it is a cool font. Looks good. The map was from Marcello in the link I provided. I gave that map a gaussian blur of I believe 20 before I used it, to soften it up a bit.

Did you say...Environment?
I was spending time at my garden cabin this morning, just relaxing and checking things to improve.
It's in the city, but in a silent area where you have lot of these similar looking small cabins.
Today I noticed the surroundings are infested with it, and it got me thinking...
What would be the most environmental BRL map ever in the Gimp Chat?
Hare it comes buddy!

Added light tone-mapping effect and Map Object layer on top.
Hard to get good shot of such a small ball, using a cellphone camera. Tried macro mode but it was even worse.
If it was better I would naturally make seamless vegetarian texture.

Looks like stained hairs on the default settings.
But it's my first official release. I'll file and coat V2 for a shiny release.

It seems a good map, Nidhogg. And I like how nice you explain the process until you took the photo.
the text is nice, perhaps a bit of polishment or as you say a shiny coat. :) :hi5

Most of my e-maps are in the 600 - 800 px range, so that wouldn't be out of the ordinary. Yes you can make an e-map out of any image that you desire...

Here's a sphere made by X's AI Grok 3. Tried it out on my robot.

Here's a second try, sphere made by Grok. I cut it out and flipped to use as an env map, again tried on my robot, also used the background filling in the middle with some clone/heal:

Haven't posted an EMap here in a while so i thought i'd add this one.
Cat in a hat, created by Affinity and Canva AI, then GImp-2.10.38 RC1>Filters>Map>map object>Sphere.

The EMap

Results in Bevel Reflect Logo 2.0, Round 2 bevel.

Pity there isn't a bevel Reflect for version 3 yet? or is there. I know Tux made it originally so someone else is going to have to fix it for 3 and there was another script/plugin/file that you had to have as well.

Cool emap Rod. Looks really good when enlarged.

Yes you need ML Bevel Reflect 2.0 along side Tux's script. Don't think there is a version 3 of it either. Especially the executable which would have to be re-written and re-compiled. I wouldn't get my hopes up.

Some emaps that I often use with custom fonts.
I tend to add colour and texture after applying the emap with BRL.
