Yes, I've set the box to keep me logged on, but still, every so often, I get logged off the site. No other site I frequent has done this to me so believe it's just with GIMPChat. Just curious if others are experiencing the same.

Hi Lyle, this has been happening to me for a year now. I did post it one time but no response, so I figured it was just a MOLLY thing.

It also happens on my i-pad. Every time I go back into GC, I have to log in every time, and yes I do have the keep in online box checked.

Not happening to me every time I visit Molly; still, it happened yesterday after I did a forum search and today after I responded to a thread. Just strange. No big deal since the browser remembers my login info. lol

Just very curious. Sorry that you experience it every time you visit the site. Have you tried to delete all of your GIMPChat cookies and then try to log in? Knowing you, I'm sure you did.

I doesn't happen very often on my PC but still happens a couple times a month and as you said, no big deal. I don't have to type in my password cuz it is remembered. It is just my ipad where i have to do it every time. I don't know anything about cookies on there if there is such a think on the ipad.

Yeah, this has been happening to me ever since I joined GimpChat a couple of months ago - usually I get logged-in automatically as soon as I connect but once every few days I have to go through the log-in process. I just assumed this was normal for this bulletin board ..part of the anti-spam measures that GnuTux introduced.

On several occasions I've been logged-out mid-session and on one occasion was actually logged-out whilst posting a reply - when I hit "Submit" I got a very terse message to the effect "You cannot reply to topics in this forum because you are not logged-in!" But obviously I was logged-in when I started writing the reply otherwise the "Post Reply" would have been disabled. I don't mind logging-in once every few days if it helps to protect GimpChat from spam, but it is a bit much when you've just spent 20 minutes of your life trying to help out somebody else and all you get for your trouble is to be thrown off the board!

Yes, I have been kicked off in the middle of typing too. Anyway, maybe it is something that can be fixed if it is happening often enough.

Sounds like there are several issues at work here.

I have the session length set to 60 minutes. If no activity is detected for this period, the user will be logged out.

The board is set to allow persistent logins (autologin when you visit the board) but IP validation is enabled. I have loosened the restrictions here slightly, which might help those attempting persistent logins. Y'all can let me know if problems continue and further research can be done to determine the problem. There are some further changes that could be made to the domain configuration, which might be helpful.

If a member happens to get logged out of the site when creating a new thread or replying, then receives the "need to login" message, they should be able to simply click the back button on the browser to get back to post entry screen. At that point they can copy the post text and/or: 1) open a new tab 2) login 3) Submit from original post entry. This always works for me (at least in FireFox).

On a personal note, for privacy reasons, I only allow cookies to remain active during a single browser session, at the most. I frequently clear my cookies as soon as I leave a site. This is to keep other sites from scanning my cookie file to gather information about where I've been. Being an administrator, it's really a bad security practice to save passwords unencrypted or to use persistent logins, so I don't do either. This means I rely on GC members to let me know if they are having issues logging in or staying logged in.

Regarding "saving unencrypted passwords":

Since I have collected logins to dozends of websites/forums/mailaccounts/etc. for years now, I keep my passwords in KeePass2 - its open source and free, of course

Regarding passwords, I use another open source tool called "pwgen" which generates nice "unguessable" passwords for me. No problem to remember, since I have KeePass.

And last but not least: There is a marvellous extension for Firefox called "KeeFox". It connects to a KeePass database and automatically fills in forms in Firefox with the account data store in a KeePass group.

I am using this combination for a very long time now (since I am also data security aware due to my job!) and I am very pleased with it.

even though I say keep me logged in it logs me out, or if I refresh sometimes it logs me out. >.<

I was in the middle of posting a response (my PDF tutorial for Rodilius Organic Flow) yesterday evening when I found out that I was logged off. Was going to add to this thread but went on to other things and forgot. Not sure why the site still does this; possibly a timeout situation if your are at GIMPChat for too long.

Hi everybody, I have noticed that after my antivirus software has declared it removed tracking cookies, is when my checkmark to keep me logged in disappears. could be a coincidence though. . . I mean checkmark that logs me on automatically disappears.

@animol - Cookies is how GC identifies you and allows you to autologin. If you remove the cookies, the check will disappear. Antivirus software usually has a feature to whitelist specific sites. If you would like to maintain your settings for GC between browser sessions, you'll need to keep the cookies. It's just the nature of the beast.

@lylejk - I have the system set to 7200 seconds (2 hours) for the maximum time to submit forms. I can disable the limit all together but according to the phpBB documentation, a form might become invalid if the session expires, regardless of this setting. I can bump that to value to 4 hours to see of it helps, but i suppose there are other reasons a current session might become invalid.

No, 2 hours should be plenty enough for anyone!
What I do now is, if I've started making a post and find I have to go off and check facts or get otherwise distracted, just save what I've written so far as a draft or copy+paste to a text editor (Notepad++ on Windows; geany or Scite on Linux), then come back to it some time later.
I think the reason Lyle got logged-out mid-reply was because of the session time-limit rather than the post-a-reply time-limit. And you can't really do much about that ..no matter how long you set the session limit to, there will always be occasions when it expires whilst your writing a reply.

Interesting jontait2; more then likely that has to be the case because I was no where near on GIMPChat for 2 hours. lol

Yes, that is the approach to use. This board supports the use of drafts. When creating long posts, like tutorials, it might take several sessions. Saving your post, then continuing later from where you left off, is the way to go.

I don't get logged off while writing a post, but I keep checking the auto login box, and each time I come back to the site I still have to log in.
